hey guys, just found out this command in quake arena which increased my frame rate in mac os x on a rage 128 using 1.29f by 20-30 frames/sec.

\s_chunksize 8192

YOU MUST RESTART QUAKE TO MAKE IT WORK (\vidrestart isn't good enough)

the default is 1024 and increasing it to 8192 rocks

check it out, if u wanna go back just type

\s_chunksize 1024

kewl,

also can i ask you guys... im running quake under X using the rage 128

should i order a radeon? (im original cube owner)

what rates do you guys get using a radeon under X?

thanks,
j3kyll

Im not running it myself, but i have seen the benchmarks and you WILL see a substantial improvement in the radeon.

Youll be able to run nice resolutions such as 1024x768x32 and still get good frame rates, or run it lower and get very high frame rates. Dont hesitate, just buy it!

With chuksize_8192 I get about 5 fps more, but no sound. So i leave it at chunksize_2048, its more than the default (1024) and i get a few more fps and sound.

Changing the chunk size had no effect for me!
640x480 low details Rage 128 OS 9.1 22.6 fps
OS X 22.6 fps
1024x768 max details Rage 128 OS 9.1 2.9 fps - ouch!
1024x768 max details Radeon OS 9.1 31.4 fps

Quake will not run on my B/W G3 450 in OS X on the PCI Radeon - it just quits...

J3kyll -

Don't know about under X, but if you don't mind the whir of fan in the background and are a least a part-time 3D gaming addict, as a Cube/500/Radeon owner i can tell you the card is well worth your moolah.

Check out the FPS stats over at xlr8yourmac.com and you'll understand exactly what i'm talking about - go Radeon while you still have the chance...

Examples:

G4 500 Apple G4 CUBE ATI Rage128 PRO 1024x768 OS 9 512MB FTS = 17.7 16.4

G4 500 Apple G4 CUBE ATI Radeon AGP 1024x768 OS 9 512MB
FPS = 49.1 49.6

Speed

I tried this under the OS X version and I gained 6 FPS (from 32.5 -> 38.4). Not a huge gain on a G3 450, but a gain none the less...thanks!

I will try this on my PC tomorrow. Sounds interesting. Perhaps you might avert losing sound by increasing "/com_hunkmegs x" from 56 to 256 and increase the amount of RAM in the "Get Info" menu in Mac OS. That gives the application more RAM to work with.

Got my cube at the last minute with an ATI RAGE pro and after some slow gaming (had a 64MB radeon in my fanbox, the playful name for my amd) I purchased a radeon card from apple 2 days before Steve Job's keynote @ new york. Ofcourse that mourning apple removed the ati card from their apple store.

Anywho, the radeon i got was fanless. Many cube owners got fan filled radeons but mine is silent. Quake 3 performance went straight up and is on par with my ATI 64MB.

That's a big no no. You give Quake 3 more than 80MB of RAM and it won't be able to use it. It's an inherent bug in the Mac port of Q3. With OS X, there isn't much to worry about.

Actually, you can get dramatically better performance in Q3 if you increase the "hunkmegs" value on larger, third-party maps. You must adjust "com_zonemegs" accordingly. I double it.

This increases performance of mods such as Urban Terror and Rocket Arena 3 drastically.

Thanks, cu.

I try typing in "\s_chunksize 8192" in the menu, but it says unknown command. What gives?
