Hi there,

I'm considering purchasing a new iMac once they come out in a few days, but one thing I'm interested is how much speed/video card really change the performance (I already know a G4 450 smokes a G3 450). I have a iMac DV+ with a 192 MB ram, and when playing Quake 3 under OS X I only get a measly 17.7 FPS. So what I'm asking is...

if there is anyone out there that is running Quake 3 on OS X on the current iMac (600mhz). What are your FPS?

Thanks a million!

Q3 framerates depends on how much you can tweak the cfg file.
The first day i installed Q3 for Mac OS X in my 500 Mhz Pismo, I got around 23fps. But now with a 'hand tweaked' q3config.cfg I get over 40 fps!

This is, obviously, playing @ 16bit color, with Vertex lightening and medium textures and graphic detail. And turning off A LOT of stuff like ilumination fx, hi quality sky, etc.

Hey Arena, thanks for the post! I agree, by editing the config.cfg, I can effectively double my FPS from 17.7 to 32.5. That's pretty good, and it still looks half decent.

I'm still interested though if there is anyone out there with a 600mhz iMac running Quake because I'm interested how much impact double the VRAM and almost double the MHz (compared to my Mac) makes on the game under OS X.

Just run a demo and open the console and type

/timedemo 1

thanks again Arena (man, playing Quake on a Pismo...you lucky duck!)

from the Q3 benchmarks iīve read in XLR8yourMac.com I understand that the '16MB' Rage in the 600Mhz iMac doesnīt make any diference at Quake3. (maybe 1 fps more than the 8MB Rage, not kidding!).
I didnīt understand why, but the benchmarks were real. I couldnīt finf the the URL for that page with the bechmarks, but it is somewhere within XLR8yourMac.com

I would also like to hear comments from other MacNN members who own this iMacs to confirm or deny this information.

Regards.
