I'm getting last year's pmg4 from outpost, and the first thing I'm doing is flushing that puck-mouse down the toilet. What's a good two-button scroll wheel mous for gaming and general use? I heard that optical mice aren't as good for gaming, is this true? Thanks for any suggestions.

I have the Micro$oft Intellimouse explorer and love it! I have never had any problems with gaming...

I actually have one on my G4 and my PC, I would never go back to a mechanical mouse again...

The original IntelliMouse (with a ball) is the best mouse for gaming. They're cheap, they are smooth, and they are fast. The IntelliMouse Explorer isn't as good (in my opinion) because it has to process those images, creating a bit of lag between your movements and onscreen movements. You really have to have both side-by-side to tell. I have both side-by-side, and I get far more frags with the IntelliMouse.

I have to agree with the source that says optical mice aren't good for gaming.

PS/2 rocks. Too bad we don't have it...

I overclock my PS/2 mouse to 200 hertz, a major speed increase from 80 hertz. I notice the difference. It results in a mouse that responds to your every movement quickly and with precision.

Possibly the best gaming mouse in the world- http://www.razerzone.com/
There's no official Mac drivers for the "Boomslang" yet but Razor are working on them.
In the meantime "USB Overdrive" will allow the Boomslang to work with Input Sprocket & non Input Sprocket games (basically all games).
I've heard that Apple uses USB overdrive when it exhibit's Macs with the Boomslang, so if it's good enough for them...

One little thing about that 4D mouse, it requires an Intuos tablet. So that means that you have to buy more gear and you get a limited space to move the mouse.

Just thought some of you might want to know.

NYAH! You dont need more than one button! I'd say the best mouse int he world would be clear, have one button, and be optical! NYAAAHHHH!!!!

In my humble opinion, Intuos mice suck. They don't mouse around right. Trust me on this one. I have a Graphire, and the mouse included feels very restrained and definitely cumbersome. It's not agile at all.

The Razor mice are pretty nice...

Well, I've had an Intellimouse Explorer since it came out (yes, the laser one) and even thought they just came out with one that is "faster", I love it. There is no lag per se, unless you have it on a surface that has a lot of nothing...ex: Glass or Mirror...
But for everyday use and excessive amounts of gaming, I have found it to kick ass...the extra buttons and percision of the laser always bring me out on top...

It's not a laser, it's a camera that takes photos at an extremely rapid rate.

I guess I"m not as hardcore of a gamer as some..I'm thinking of the intilimouse explorer, since it looks like it would be good for general use, also. The Razer mouse looks sweet, but the drivers and odd design make me a bit hesitant to buy it without trying it. Anyone here actually used one of the razer thingies?

There's definitely a learning curve with the Razer Boomslang, but I've heard countless reports of people sticking it out and ending up being die-hard Boomslang fanatics who would now never even think about going back to anything else.

Well, I decided to go for a Razer after reading all the reviews on it at their website. I emailed the makers and asked about mac drivers, and how many features I can get using USB overdrive as a driver. Here's the response I got:

"The USB Overdrive free software, http://www.usboverdrive.com/, will allow
you to utilize nearly all of the functions that our current PC drivers
allow. We do plan to work on Mac drivers as soon as we can find a developer
who can replicate the on-the-fly sensitivity feature. We have already been
through five RFP's with no luck so far. We will continue to search until we
find a supplier with the right type of capabilities.

Razerguy"

Looks promising. Hopefully with the RADEON we will start getting more game related stuff for macs. I'll post a review of the mouse after I've used it for awhile.
