Back in March, Connectix and Sony announced (
press release) that:
- Sony had acquired Connectix's VGS emulation technology assets
- Connectix would continue to sell the current version of VGS until June 30,2001
- Sony and Connectix would work together to develop emulation products
Sony had previously sued Connectix to stop emulating the PlayStation because Sony was concerned that the emulator was stealing profits from its console business, increasing the chances that end users could play pirated games, and (more importantly) a threat to Sony's control over the PlayStation platform. Apparently this "joint agreement" was their settlement. It actually looked like it might be a good thing, because it would settle the legal challenges to VGS and ensure compatibility with a greater number of games.
Unfortunately, that was the last real news on the subject. I've been waiting eagerly to hear what the two would create together. I had hoped they would announce something before the June 30 date, but it now looks like Sony just bought out the VGS technology to eliminate it.

If they really were working on a next-generation emulator, it stands to reason that they would have announced it by now to get people excited.
Has anyone heard otherwise?
