I've been trying to get a G4 400 Mac to join a networked game of Unreal Tournament.

I'm running a full version of UT on the PC and hosting games from there.

Downloaded the demo version of UT for Mac and have attempted to connect to the game running on the PC. At best, the Mac recognises the fact that the PC is hosting a game and lists the server and the other players connected, but when you try to connect to the server it displays a message 'Connecting to <Server IP>. Press F10 to cancel' and does nothing.

I was curious as to whether anyone else has tried this and knows whether the PC and Mac versions will talk to each other. There is no information on the Unreal site about this and I didn't want to blow $80 on a full version for Mac only to find it doesn't work!

Any info would be greatly appreciated and any info on other games that will work across platforms.

Here at work we have Compaq PC's (yuck) and G4 Macs (yum) and we played UT in a mixed environment. We had no problems or whatsoever to connect the G4's to the game hosted on one of the PC's.

No special settings, no tweaking no nothing.

So I'd say go ahead and buy UT.

Thanks for the advice on the mixed environment! I'll now have to find a cheaper copy of UT for Mac...any suggestions?

Does anyone have any experience with other cross-platform games?

Quake 3
Diablo 2
Warcraft 2

and anything else available on both platforms??

I can tell you from experience that Starcraft and Quake 3 both work fine cross-platform, as should UT. One thing you might wanna check out is if the demo has a limited functionality in that it can only connect to a demo server...at the very least, the demo will be unable to use maps that the full version has, and I believe it also lacks a number of weapons present in the full version as well. So, considering these things, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that you had to buy the full version to connect to a full version server. Try to play an internet game; if the only servers listed, or if the only servers you can connect to, are demo servers, then there's your answer.

P.S UT is almost one of those bargain-bin games at this point; it's pretty old and you should be able to shop around. You can probably find a pretty good baseline to judge retail prices by going to one of the online computer stores like MacMall and seeing how much they are charging for it.

I have played Unreal Tourney and Quake 3 cross platform Mac/Windows/Linux and I must say that they are the two most enjoyable cross platform network games out there!

The fact that you can see the hosted game is a start but I too had some troubles with the Mac demo version and PCs. The full version ran with out a hitch. You can find Unreal Tournament: GOTY (Game of the Year Edition, it comes in a red box) for around $20-$30 at various gaming stores, or you can find both the original and the GOTY edition (contains latest version and extra mods and maps) on www.ebay.com for around the same price.

Hope that helps

Thanks for all the info! I think I'll have to check out Q3 soon too! Now if I could just afford a nice GEForce3 card for the G4....
