I have an iMac Rev. A with a Voodoo 2 Game Wizard. I installed Quake 3 Arena and tried to start it up.... my screen flashed a few times and it said could not initialize Open GL.... So I backed up all my files and did a quick reformat and I still get the same message... Can anyone help??

I don't have an iMac and seeing how you put in a GameWizard I assume you know what you are doing... but how about this. Do you have the newest VooDoo drivers that work with your card? What version of Quake III did you try to install? (make sure it isnt an old version perhaps... also, try installing the game and not restarting and then upgrading the game to 1.27, then restart and try playing). How much RAM do you have and how much does the game want? Is the Game Wizard card officailly supported by ID? What OS are you running? (If 9 make sure you have all the proper updates such as 9.04 and the multimedia updates as well. Finally, try disabling a bunch of extensions or starting up in Base. I know AIM, Virex 5.91 and Apple Audio Extension caused hang ups on my machine after I installed Quake.

Hi again,
I tried a few other games that use Open GL and they all seem to not work either...
I have 128 MB RAM, I have every OS update for 9.04.. I am thinking we'll see what happens when OS 9.1 is released on Tuesday.

I have the exact same setup (except 160M of RAM), and Quake 3 v1.27 works great on my machine. I'd bet that your problem lies with what extensions you have activated. Go visit the thread listed below and look at the post by "the Dude". I'd bet this will solve your problem.

If not, then I would make sure you have the newest OpenGL extensions. Sometimes Software Update doesn't grab everything from what I understand, so you may need to get them from apple.com.

I had the same prob. But after trying to start up again 2 or 3 times, the prob mysteriously dissapeared. It is most probably extensions. this problem also occurs under OS X PB, but occurs much less.

I had the same problem (G3 233 with a voodoo II) and I had to mess around with my ATI extensions. I turned off "ATI Rage 128 3D Accelerator", restarted, and Quake 3 worked after that. Give it a try.

My problem now is that I get the same message when I try to launch the Heavy Metal Demo, and I really don't feel like messing with the ATI extensions again, especially not that I got Q3 working.
