Well we are all hoping for UT2k3 to come to the Macintosh. I hope it comes soon (checking inside mac games and MacNN every day for it).
Well AA (Americas Army) is based on the UT2k3 engine so it should be an easy port to get it to the Macintosh.
Maybe we should all post http://americasarmy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=5235&forum=9 and tell them we want a Macintosh version!

Heh, I think we should wait until the port of UT2K3 is started. It might be a long time before we see UT2k3 for Mac .

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't want a Mac version of that propaganda game.

It was, well, one of the most addicting games made for the Mac.

Lemme get this straight...America's Army is based on the latest Unreal engine and the Unreal Tourney 2k3 isn't even out yet?

I looked at some AA screenshots...and while I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, the screenshots depicted that the game indeed uses the latest Unreal engine but made poor use of textures and the polygon count on those character models.

The unreal warfare engine has been done and liscencable for a while, the game being finished is completely different from the engine.

America's Army is very buggy, but a lot of fun. Very different aesthetic than UT - slow, deliberate, strategic... like Counterstrike. The graphics, IMHO, are excellent. I've played a very recent UT2k3 and it's a blast. Stunning graphics, beautiful maps, cool weapons, etc. I put together a PC just to play games. For much less than 1/2 the cost of my dual 1gHz G4, I've got a screaming machine (Athlon 2.4ghz, GeForce 4 Ti 4600). Still love my Mac, but for games.... forget about it...

erci .. probably a bit like Tactical OPs [now known as] TO assault on Terror! a mod for the original unreal engine.. and indeed the UT2k2 engine has been completed for some time.. the editor was leeked several months ago in the unreal alpha, and that's works fine.
Hope to see you all in the zone...
And lets hope they stay on the case with patches and updates.
BTW... Buy a PC and get best of both worlds. I do!

I also think we should wait for the enginee to be ported. Then we should send emails over emails to them - side by side to petitions over petitions (which the people in these forums seem to be amazing in

America's Army is most definitely not UT2k3... It's just plain UT.
I personally don't like AA, but then again I hate ultra realistic games like that. You know, Rainbow 6 type games. However, if you're into stuff like that, there's nothing wrong with AA - and the pricetag is very attractive. Not sure why some think it's buggy, though.

I believe it actually is based on the new Unreal engine, although I agree that its graphics seem blah. To be sure, I only saw one map being played (that bridge one for anyone who's seen it) but it looked pretty awful to me (and it was on a GF4Ti4200 too so it's not like the graphics were cranked down). Wasn't sure what to make of it. The guy who owned the computer pshawed at my observation and said that the graphics were supposed to be 'realistic', but it was all grey and clunky looking to me.

The Unreal Engine is an ongoing development project, in quite a linear fashion.
See UTEngine News.
At points along the development, Epic makes builds of the engine available for licencing. Game developers tend to write additions for their particular purposes, so that causes the variations on the theme.
Still, because it's one engine, licencees will usually benefit from new builds by Epic, which introduce new features to both the engine and the tools.
This can result in two niceties:
1: Existing games can gain features, as the engine beneath them matures.
2: Mac ports involving the engine could gain from previous efforts, as it's not a totally new beast.
I assume the work put into UT for OS X done by Westlake Interactive paves the way for faster, or atleast easier work with new Unreal Engine games.

I really do hope it is ported to the mac. I play it on my roomates computer, and it really is amazing.
As far as what engine it uses, it must be UT2k3's, because as far as I know, the UT engine doesn't use Hardware T&L at all, and AA taxes my roomates Geforce2.
Contrary to blizzards post, the graphics are great. He is kind of right about the bridge level, but that one is the most unoriginal . If you play the counter-terrorist maps at night with nightvision on, it looks like I am watching TV. It is the only game I have played that has forests that are actually like forests, and you can see long distances (the sniper training has you firing at targets almost a kilometer off).
