I have an 867g4/gf2mx. I got diablo 2 and the expansion pack the day i got my machine. it ran beautifully at 800x600 and at millions of colors in open gl mode. now, for some reason, the only way i can play it is if i choose sofware mode, as everything else makes the game look more like a slide show. i have tried boosting the ram to diablo(i gave it 200 megs at one point) and i have tried reinstalling it, but i cant get it to work. has anyone here had or heard of this problem???

Try trashing your preferences. Can't hurt...

hey, have an update here, i found this while looking at blizzard's tech support forum, im going to try it at home and hope it works:

We are looking into reports of very low frame rates with the expansion set and Diablo II v1.08 or later. Please use the following steps to configure the system and the game. You may want to print this so that you can reference it easier while you work through the steps. If you have Mac OS X installed, we ask that you restart into Mac OS 9.1 before you run through these steps.

Part 1: System Configuration

Open the Apple System Profiler application. It is in the Apple Menu. Look at the Devices and Volumes tab to find your Display Card information.
Read the information below and make sure you have the most recent driver software for your video card installed.
Rage 128 and Radeon card users MUST use Mac OS 9.0 or later. ATi does not support any earlier version of the Mac OS with the after market Radeon v1.0 or Radeon v1.1.1 drivers available on the ATi web site. http://support.ATi.com/products/mac/ Before you install any new driver software, read the documentation included with the driver update and follow ATi's directions carefully.

nVidia card users should have the nVidia Graphics v2.1.1 update from Apple. It is available via the Software Update control panel in Mac OS 9.0 and more recent versions of the Mac OS. The update may also be found via the Support area on Apple's web site. It is important that you update the firmware for the nVidia card before the driver update is installed. Both the firmware update and the driver update are included in the nVidia Graphics v2.1.1 update download, but they are separate steps in the update process. As per Apple's recommendations, nVidia cards should not be used with versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS 9.0

3dfx card users should note that 3dfx has provided no new driver updates since 3dfx was purchased by nVidia. We only support the Voodoo 4/5 PCI v1.0.1 and Voodoo 4/5 PCI v1.1.2 drivers. These drivers support all the Voodoo 5, and Voodoo 4, PCI cards, as well as many of the older Voodoo 3 PCI cards. We do not support Voodoo 2 PCI or Voodoo 3 PCI cards with beta version drivers installed. Current drivers for 3dfx cards can be found at http://www.3dfx.com/

NOTE: We strongly recommend that you restart with extensions off and remove all the old video card extensions, control panels, and preferences files before you install new driver software.

Open the Extension Manager control panel. Select the Mac OS Base extension set using the choice bar at the top to the window. Add any video card extensions and control panels you may need to this set and save it as "Diablo II Set"
Open the Memory control panel. Set Virtual Memory to 128MB or more.
Restart the computer.
Hold down the Command and Option keys while the last inits load up at the bottom of the screen as the computer starts up. Keep the keys held down until you are prompted to rebuild the desktop file. Allow the computer to rebuild the desktop file.

Part 2: Startup Options Configuration

Hold down the Option key while you start Diablo II or Lord of Destruction. You should see a small window appear with startup options for the game.
Find the Configure Video option and click on it.
Click on the Rescan Monitors button.
If you have an nVidia card, Use OpenGL mode in thousands of colors. If you have a 3dfx card, use 3dfx mode in thousands of colors. If you have an ATi card, use RAVE mode in thousands of colors.
Click on the right most arrow button in the lower right hand corner of the window.
Click on the checkbox in the middle of the window which is labeled "Expert Mode." You will see a choice bar appear.
Click on the choice bar and select the lowest refresh rate listed. Then click on the Test button and wait for a picture to appear on the screen.
Click the button labeled "OK" at the bottom of the test screen.
Click on the right most arrow button in the lower right hand corner of the window.
Repeat steps 6 to 8 once. Then repeat step 9 twice.
You should be back to the startup options screen. Press the return key or click on the OK button on this screen.

Part 3: In Game Options Configuration

Start a Single Player game of Diablo II or Lord of Destruction.
Press the Esc key once the character appears in town.
Select the Options menu item.
Select the Video Options menu item.
If you have Lord of Destruction, set Resolutions to 640x480.
Set Lighting Quality to "Low"
Set Blended Shadows to "Off"
Set Perspective Mode to "Off"
Return to the Options menu and select Audio Options.
Turn the Music Volume all the way down.
Return to the game screen.
Press the Return key and type in /fps
Keep an eye on the frame rate and number of dropped frames as you play in the later acts of the game or when there are a lot of monsters on the screen at once.

We are looking for single digit frame rates. If you experience single digit frame rates at any point in the game after following the configuration steps listed above, send an Apple System Profiler report with information about Devices, Volumes, Extensions, and Control Panels, to macsupport@blizzard.com we will add your report information to our records. For sorting purposes, we ask that you send these emails with the following subject heading: "D2 / D2x Slowdown Report"
