Does anyone know how much improved Open GL is in OS 9.1? Is it going to totally floor me, or are we talking something like half a frame per second in Quake 3?

This doesn't answer your question but I bet we see Quake 3 1.27 final tomorrow. Graeme Devine said he had it ready for 9.1's implementation of OpenGL but had to go back to coding for the prior mac OpenGL release since the new drivers hadn't been released. So with 9.1 and the new OpenGL being released tomorrow we should see the final build very soon.

I have seen nothing that would indicate a huge speed boost. I'd say just the minimum increase on most computers (anywhere from 0 to 5 FPS, I'm guessing).

However, I hear they've done some Altivec enhancements in 9.1...not sure if OpenGL will be affected, but if it is then us G4 users will see the improvements more than anyone else.

I wouldn't rush out to get OS 9.1. From what I hear, it takes a huge amount of hard drive space and requires even more memory than 9.0.4. Wait a few days to find out what other people think of it.

As for OpenGL, I'm pretty sure that you can get the most recent version from the Cro-Mag Rally demo. It came with 1.2.1, even though it wasn't "officially" out until OS 9.1 was released.

What's funny is 9.1 comes with OpenGL 1.2, then released was 1.2.1

Hotline 1.84 fine over here too. Same with Hotline Server.
Haven't run into a single app that doesn't work.
Only annoying thing is what it did to my apps folder, but that was an easy fix.

One thing I like about OS 9.1 is that my system doesn't use up more than 50mb!

Whereas before with VM on it was at 70 or 80, with VM off it was like over 100 or thereabout.

I have more than enough RAM (768mb) but sometimes I need as much to dedicate to Photoshop 6!

Anyway, it's doesn't crash (yet) and it snappy and uses less RAM. I hope they continue tweaking OS 9.1 (I can't get use to OS X-yet!)
