My #1 question here after Steve's statements today is this:

What will be the fps impact and the overall look effect of the upgrade to a UMA-2 motherboard with a 133 MHz bus, 4x AGP, these particular nVidia cards (thank GOD) and "write combining" for 3D games? I must declare that whoever first posts the conclusive results of this test (most likely a Mac gaming site) will be my favorite gaming site or quite awhile.

I know we have this interview but I want more than that.

So what's the deal???

This interview (More on PCI Performance..) explains write combining a bit better. According to this impact of enabling write combining (or store gathering) should be significant. The processor can burst data to the PCI bus without having to interpret it as "burstable".. or something like that. Does that make sense? I don't know. Read the article. It's a bit technical but you'll get the gist.

The Voodoo hardware was notoriously more dependant on write combining for attaining its peak speed. However, it should provide a sizable speed boost on Nvidia's hardware. I'm not so sure about ATI cards because they use a different method with their Mac cards to push data across the bus.

xlr8yourmac.com posted numbers for Quake3(recorded & submitted by someone from another site, but xlr8yourmac is one of my favorites, so go check it out)

The part on xlr8yourmac.com that really surprised me was this:

Quake 3 Update w/Altivec Support Due (Possibly) Tomorrow Says ID - Abe Jellinek wrote that Graeme (ID software) has commented in a Quake3world forum post that Mac Quake3 v1.27h will have Altivec (G4) support that will "flex that velocity engine" and that "this safely puts the G4 ahead of the PC". (!?). He said he will probably post the update tomorrow. He also commented they have a G4/533 w/Geforce2 (MX?) in his office. .

Hey Trevor, any chance you could go into more detail on the comment concerning the different methods ATi and nVidia cards use to push their data across the bus?

A PC friend told me that the Radeon DDR was currently by far the better choice for fast games, so I'd be interested to see if the same holds true for the Mac platform...
