I have never been a gamer, but I would like to get a game to play on my PB 667 dvi. There are so many, and at $50 a pop I can only afford to buy one. I am looking at these games:

soldier of fortune 2 double helix
max payne
warcraft III
fallout 2
stronghold
metal of honor
no one lives forever
age of empires II
civilization III

I haven't played any of them or found demos. I don't want a game where you have to sit through conversations between characters or read a lot of stories off the screen. I know some of these games are not out yet. Any other suggestions would be appreciated... just looking for quality entertainment.

Everyone likes different types of games.

Some strategy, some rpg, some action etc.

You dont say what you like, so its hard to help you! If you dont actually know what you like, thats probably good thing; its time to find out!

Now, onto my suggestions...

Warcraft III - its awesome. It is a strategy game - but if you were to only buy one, this would be it. Great single player and online depth.

MOHAA - Medal of honour allied assault - very good first person shooter game with some strategy elements. Immensely popular online.

Return to Castle wolfenstein is my personal favourite fps - similar to MOHAA in many ways, but it has its own charm.

One of those three. At least that narrows it down for you of the current games that are available.

For future games, Jedi Knight and max payne are both awesome on other platforms. Max payne is very violent with a sick sense of humour so you need to like that kind of thing (i loved it).

In the end, you just need to pick a game that appeals to you. Any one of my suggestions would be a good choice.
MacBook Alu, 13", 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 256MB video
G5 Imac, 17", 1.9Ghz, 1.5GB RAM, 128MB video, built in isight, airport and bluetooth
Indigo iBook, 366mhz; 320MB RAM; CD; FW; Airport

metal of honor is the best game I have played this year. I have played RTCW liked it- but I now completly hooked on metal of honor.
I was going to list everything I like about it, but come to think of it there is nothing that I don't like about it!

for my money, I would invest in civ 3. i have played more hours of civ 1, 2 & 3 than I care to admit, and still find enjoyment in the game. if killer graphics and pulse pounding gameplay are what you are after, this is definately NOT the game for you. But if you want a multi-faceted and complex game that will provide hours upon hours of fun, civ 3 is my suggestion.
