Just tried installing Master of Orion II on a new quicksilver G4. It looked OK for a while but the race pics weren't right and it wouldn't accept keyboard input. End of the road for this classic?

Oops! I loaded it off the original CD and forgot about the patch. Sorry for the waste of bandwidth. :o

Damn! -still doesn't work, even with the 1.6 patch.

I managed to install the 1.6 patch and get to the start menu. The thing I found when I started it was that it wouldn't resize automatically. It just centered itself on the screen. Of course this could have more to do with my setup. I'm running 9.2.1 and 10.0.4 (4s10) that came with my DP 800. I played the game itself and it ran fine. Damn it's speedy to play compared to my old machine... Have you managed to get it to run in 9.2.1? BTW I have a GeForce 3, using the Nvdia drivers (You may want to make sure that the ATI drivers are turned off; I've heard of this causing video anomolies).

Thanks Osirisis!! I've got the same setup but I hadn't turned the ATI drivers off. I'll give it a try tonight and post the results. BTW, I did set 256 colors (among other choices) and 640 X 480 (among other choices), but it still came up with a very strange color palate and flaky controls so it wasn't playable. I couldn't believe how fast it set the game up, though. I REALLY want to get this running before MoO III comes out!
P.S. I used the large install - did you?

Yeop, large install. I've got enough hard drive space in the new machine, so why not. I didn't change the colors from millions. I let the game manage that itself. Didn't see any color problems in the game. I don't think the display itself should matter, but I'm using a cinema display. If you want, I can test it on the VGA montior I have at home. Let me know.

Turned off the ATI drivers - still no joy. The startup screens are fine, but when the selections come up, the colors go haywire. Moving the cursor over the screen fixes them in a rectangular block which moves with the cursor - for a while. It's as though the game wants a pallette of colors which the computer can't live with. I have a Sony G400 monitor connected to the VGA port of the GeForce3. That seems to be the only difference between our systems. Let me know if you can think of anything else, Osirisis. I certainly appreciate your help.
Just realized that the colors I'm getting are the exact opposite of what they should be - like a color negative. Wonder what that means?

Do you have another VGA monitor that you could try... Just to eliminate the monitor from the equation, even if it is 15". I wonder if color sync may be affecting things... I'd check the monitor before monkeying with colorsync though. Also did you manually set the 256 colors, or did you let the machine do it? I let my machine change the colors by itself. Might be worth giving that a shot. You could also try rebuilding the desktop for classic using the classic control panel. Can't think of anything else to try at the moment... I'm leaning towards the monitor thing...

Got a cable modem being installed today so I probably won't get to try the monitor switch for a while (this weekend is out too). I DID notice something, though - when the first selection screen (the one with the swinging arm) comes up, it works OK for a fraction of a second and then the colors reverse. I'll bet that's where the program is setting its 256 colors. I do have a few ideas to try out before I give up. I'll post the results here.
P.S. I never thought of color sync because Sony provides the Mac files for the G400 ON A FLOPPY!!! and I hadn't gotten around to putting it in my 8500, bringing it over on the crossover cable and installing it on the QS.
As always, thanks for the advice.

One more question, Osirisis - what profile do you have set in your monitors control panel?

I'll check when I get home, but I believe it's the profile it came with. The one for the Cinema Display... I'll update this when I get home.

I got a nice inverse color palette with everything orange
Welcome to the club! I'm still trying to figure out how you got it to run originally. I've been too busy to get back to MoO II, but I'm not going to give up yet. By "heroes" I'm guessing you mean HoMM III Complete. That's my other favorite game. Haven't even had a chance to install it on the new box yet. Please tell me there aren't any "issues" with it on the dual 800. BTW, I'd hang on to that girlfriend if I were you.

I got the same problems too, I tried one patch a while back, think it was this 1.6. It seemed to fix some of the color problems but the animation was always screwed up, fine I can live with that. But after a few more minutes of play it crashed! Well, I have given up on MOO (hell it crashed a whole lot back when it was new) and early await MOOIII. That game is gonna be awesome!
Does anyone know if they have stated that their will be a mac version of MOOIII? and if it will be carbon?

HoMM III Complete works fine... Trust me... With MOO II out of commission, I've put many many hours in on the hotseat version of that. It has crashed on occasion on me, but after turning off the finder using command F, I've yet to see any problems. Of course what can you expect when you play 10 hours straight
The only problems I've had is slowdown over time... Think it's more of any issue of 10.0.4 than any thing else, but it might be the coding in the game... Restarting classic doesn't seem to help. Besides that, it kicks ass on DP 800s
From what I've read at this page there will be a mac version of MOO III. Only catch is no more hotseat It's the nature of the new game, but it's still going to kick ass...
Anyone have an idea when HoMM IV is due out? Read something about it for the PC months ago... Maybe this time we can get a map editor
PS. I intend to hold onto the girlfriend. I've completely corrupted her... Anime, RPGs, and multiplayer computer games

MOOII or HOMMIII? For me, Hero's was slower in classic, though I have roughly half your hardware with a DP 450 ...but I love it anyway.

Couldn't find the mac reference at the site, but its' still in early development so I guess we can worry about that later... HerosIV is due (supposidly) out late fall this year, but realisticly it will be out around the same time as MOOIII, until MOO gets delayed of course.

I would too, but I got my own who was already into Anime, I just had to corrupt her with video games
ps. Sorry about having to remove your smilies, got a limit of 8 so it wouldn't' post...

Hmm, my bad on the faq... It was an offsite link under cool stuff... Here ya go.
HoMM III is the one I saw the slowdown in... Didn't get that far in MOO II... That puppy crashed within 30 minutes Guess I have one reason to keep my old machine around... At least until classic gets fixed...

Thanks for the right link
You still saw the slow down on a DP 800? I was expecting that it would at least play like normal with that kinda hardware. Guess classic just isn't up to the task until 10.1 with full 9.2 compatibly is out. If you are expecting classic to run MOOII I'm sorry but I doubt that it will ever happen. But do note that it was just a buggy game in the first place, and no one is making patches today...

From what I have read in the OS X forum, the slowdown in 10.0.4 does not seem to affect the 10.1 builds that everbody is playing with (at least they've stopped complaining about it), so there is hope.
I think our best shot to get MoO II running is to find a way to contact Kirk Sumner (he may still be at MacSoft) and whine, beg and plead like crazy. It should be a VERY simple patch.

Okay, say he does it for two loyal fans of the game. But what about all of the other bugs that we are sure to run into? Go back and beg him again? Sorry, I wish I could believe he would but I doubt it...

I'd settle for a simple fix of the video problem. I think that's the only real glitch. I agree that if that doesn't do it, it's time to hang it up, but I'd like to give it a shot. MoO III is still at least 6 months away.

We could always petition for an OS 8 emulator for emulation inside of classic Well, I've never had problems running in 8 or 8.5... Come to think of it, MOO II worked fine in 9.1.... Has to be one of the bug fixes they included... You know the bug where MOO II worked null

Thanks for the link... For what it's worth, I chimed in... I figure the more attention that is given to the thread, the more likely it is that we'll be able to get a bug fix, or a suggested list of extensions to run to get the game up and running... I think this is important what with MOO III not supporting hotseat. That's the main way I play the game...

Ancient, where you the one who I helped with the Sig? Did it work?
As I have been letting Osiris know by e-mail, MOOII works flawlessly under X.1 5G48, had a few glitches during my first two launches, the third was completely flawless. Unbelievable.

Great news, Juan! Just another reason to count the days until 10.1. As for the sig, no, that wasn't me. I created a web site with my broadband provider at http://members.home.net/gmfeier/ which only contains the gif I want to use. I tried putting it up with the img tags with url/filename between the tags where the filename includes the .gif extension. All I got for my troubles was the familiar little box with the red X. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I got some bad news for all of ya, today when I tried to play MOO again...first off for some reason it forgot where data B was, so I had to copy that into the MOOII folder, then launch. QT now doesn't seem to work again. And through a few hours of gaming, I had encountered 3 crashes. Two came right after I tried to invade a planet. This seems to be a serious bug that is very repeatable. Can anyone else do this? Might it be just my copy? The last crash seemed to result from someone IM'ing me.
All in All the game is still much more solid then under 9, and there are my only gripes.
PS. NEVER did a crash take down classic, I just had to relaunch the game, all of one bounce.

Why are you bothering invading... Just obliterate it from orbit (Stellar Converter of course)
Well at least one can restart the game real quick... Apple needs to hurry up and get 10.1 out the door... I can hardly wait...
Counting the days, hours, minutes...

I'll test it on 5G64 this weekend also, hopefully the bug is just some compatibility issue with classic... Otherwise I can look for speed improvements...though UT/Diablo2/Starcraft would be better for that...

Well I got around to testing MOO II. I was able to replicate the problem in OSX 5g48... The second I clicked on invade is when it crapped out. Classic was still running though, so I know it was just MOO II that went down. I managed to locate my copy of g64... Busy backing up files so I may not get around to testing how it works in that until tomorrow.

Well I tried UT, when in 9 I get 50fps on average, now I was getting <20fps...and under 10.1 I have an extra CPU! Haven't gotten around to MOOII yet, got 'Conquest of New World' to work, hasn't' since 9, so I have been enjoying reliving my childhood.

Well, I got around to testing it in 5g64... News is not good... The error still kicks up in that version... I wonder what happens when we try it with the version straight off the CD as opposed to the updated version... Well if I find time, I'll look into it....
