I am pretty crap at WC3 multiplayer (100 loses, 15 wins)
Anyone have any suggestions / strategies?
In particular I get killed a lot by early rushes by the opponent.
Does a modem connection or a slower computer disadvantage you in anyway when playing multiplayer? (probably not and I'm just crap
thanks

War3 gets mondo chunky in big multiplayer games...believe me, a slow computer can make a HELL of a difference. In one game, four player vs 4 computer, I was getting about two FPS in one of the more pitched battles...somewhat difficult to control my guys. A modem can make a difference too, if there are a lot of dudes running around. But...if you're getting killed in rushes, just learn the hotkeys and how to build build BUILD right at the start of the game...one of my friends can have two farms and a barracks going less than 5 seconds into the game. Then, just pop out as many footmen (or whatever) as possible to try and nuke the rush.

I am about to cable....and hopefully 10.2 will speed things up a bit.....then no excuses I'spose.
I just had a game as Undead (usually Human) and WON
He was winning the whole time until eventually I got my frost dragons and kicked his butt because he was Orc and had no air shooters.

man, we just played a game (4 on 4)and we were just outmatched! level 1 vs level 7! It hurt, but we learned a lot by looking at the replays. We've been trying to figure out how to stop the rush without basically rushing yourself, as rush games blow and are not even worth the time. Haven't found the silver bullet yet but (IMO) setting up a tower or two can make a big difference. Also try to get a second gold min under 5 min and 2 (basic unit building) really help if you can finance it.
This is just some simple stuff, I think I might go and wip up some defensive strategies that we have come up with.
[edit] okay here are some simple defenses to a position.
The undead can do it ether way staggered (like pic) or bunched like the others. I have seen some players using a starcraft strategy of building them across the map, this is hard to fight, it obstructs enemy movement and delays attacks against your home base giving you extra time to build up.

You also have the option of closing it off with farms/burros or leaving a gap for your armys to use.

And with the night elf's you can put your army right in the frey and the moon wells will heal them giving you that edge.

I think one of the major issues that I have had during play is that players don't want to communicate. That is key! I can have a hero + 2 footmen in about 30 seconds plus. After they rush (and about 80% of the time they do)
1) I send all of my peons to collect gold, then I prep four peons in the town center (select their destination to the gold mine).
2) I then select one peon that has by now already picked up one piece of gold to build a barracks.
3) I then select another peon that has just delivered gold to build my alter (for my hero)
4) After two guys have been created from the town center, I select the closest trees as the flag point so the last two peons collect wood.
5) After the guy that was making the barracks is done, I send him to build a farm.
6) When the peon is done with the alter, have him build a lumber mill.
that's my opener every time... I'm not great, but I'm not the worst...

Things one should ALWAYS do...
1) Communicate, communicate, communicate...
From a little "hey" to "attack in 30 seconds" it makes a difference!
2) Ask for help!
If you are being attacked, send out a ping "!" and say "HELP!!!" Sometimes they don't know if you are being attacked or if you are just leveling up your heroes. Also, if you need gold or wood FAST, ask for it first. You never know what your allies have.
3) Work fast.
Speed is everything in the first 1.5 minutes. You should have a set pattern. If you are being rushed, and are unable to counter, you are too slow on the start. (practice in single player and time yourself)
4) Save every loss, and some wins.
If you don't know how they rushed so fast, find out! Save the replay and check them out.
5) Destroy key building and structures.
If you rush someone, and your guys are just sitting around, destroy the opponents alter or lumber mill.
6) Kill peons!
It's sad, but it does take some time and resources to create peons. On occasion, you can rush a vacant town (when they are assembling units for a rush) and kill the peons. This throws the town into chaos.
7) Level up a hero after successfully defending a rush.
If they rush, and you send them back to the stone age, level up. It's going to be at least a few mins. before they are back.
8) Plan the layout of your town.
Speed is everything, but you shouldn't design your town to be vulnerable. Build farms in rows so that invaders are funneled toward your defensive towers etc. (I would rather have them attacking a farm over my alter any day!) Use farms to close off openings. Line towers with farms.
Things you should NEVER do...
1) Try to rush by yourself.
Unless you want to waste your troops, go into a rush with at least one other player, if not all of them!
2) Idly watch a battle.
Your units are semi-smart, let them fight while you are directing peons, upgrade buildings/units, creating units etc. (naturally you should direct units when it's to your advantage, but at other times, let them be)
3) Build major defensive structures for your original town hall.
Just around the time you build them, your gold mine will run out, and you will have used up all of your lumber.
4) Think "well, if I help him now, I'm will never win"
There is no I in TEAM!!! I have seen so many games where it's 3 vs. 3 and one team member and I are getting our a$$es kicked only to see that the third player is holding his army back. His thought: "well, I'm not 100% ready!" Basically you need to help with whatever you have whenever you are needed. The second one of your team members falls, you fall as well.
5) Let your hero sit
Heroes like to fight. In fact, they love to fight. They self heal, so let them battle whenever they can! It only helps them level up faster!

I hope I can help. I have a level 9 account on east (which I dumped because of its low record due to losses when I started the game) and a new account with a 65% record or so. I have a pretty good team build order for nightelves down, which mass produces archers. As you know, archers suck by themselves due to low health, but have very high damage and rocks with support (team mates). Archers with grunts, archers with footmen, archers with ghouls, archers with hunts, it all works. ANYWAY. Here's the build order.
4 wisps to gold, 1 wisp to wood.
Queue up 5 wisps, as they come out:
First wisp to ancient of war
Second wisp to moonwell
Third wisp to alter of elders
Fourth wisp to gold
Fifth wisp to wood
About this time, all the buildings should finish. Make the moonwell wisp continue building two more moonwells, and have the AOW pump out archers continuously. And have the alter wisp go to wood, and start a priestess as soon as the alter finishes.
When wood/gold allows, build a hunt hall and upgrade damage, then armor.
Rush when you have about ten archers/hero with your team mates together.
The key strategy here is to keep the archers in the back and FOCUS FIRE. You can kill opponent heroes in about three or four volleys (4, 5 seconds?) and every unit in about 3 or less volleys.
After the game is over in about ten-fifteen minutes, it usually ends up that I have 3 or 4 hero kills, and 50 or so enemy unit kills
Out of 14 games with this strategy, I have had 10 wins, 2 losses, and 2 disconnects. In two games, the rush was not entirely successful, and the game went on longer, in which case I teched up to chimeras and sieged the enemy's base. If you want any replays, I have a couple good ones. PM me with any questions. Hope that helped.
In case you were wondering, I WOULD have a 75% record or so if I wasn't disconnected twice Oh well, these things happen.
