I LOVE OS X, but I have to say that the on X, I feel major slow downs in big battles... I'm not sure how to show FPS, but it's a general feeling...
Ugh, I can't wait for 10.2!!!

But, if you think that WC3's performance on an iBook with its uber-crap video card is great, your standards are supah low. same applies if you think the performance on X is the same as 9. Its not. There isn't any way to show FPS but WC3 slows down enough to the point where you could (honestly) count the fps on one hand sometimes.

What are the downsides of playing on the older ibook (i.e. dual usb 500)? How bad is it? Would it be better to run it under 9 or X?

Loading is somewhat slow (the other players always seem to load the game before I'm done) and gameplay is okay. It does slow down during major battles with all of the different graphics going.

[edit - You shouldn't be running OS X on this model iBook (or any for that matter) anyways! Play under OS 9 for sure!]

Warcraft 3 is great on my iBook, but it's probably because I have the best iBook Apple ever produced: the Graphite 466. Things get a little slow in large battles, and scrolling leaves a lot to be desired, but it's still very playable. I play in OS 9 since I don't feel like upgrading 10.1.2 to 10.1.5 in order to experience crappy performance. I'll wait until I get Jaguar to see how it plays in OS X, since Jaguar supposedly speeds the game up appreciably.

I run OSX on both my 500 iBook and my 700 iBook wonderfully, throw some extra RAM in there and things work fine. In my opinion the small amount of sluggishness in the GUI compared to OS9 is NOWHERE near reason enough to digress back to the unstable mess of an operating system that was OS9.
Having espoused my beliefs <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> I would like to ask, HAS ANYONE GOT WARCRAFT III WORKING ON AN EXTERNAL SCREEN FROM AN IBOOK RUNNING OSX?!?!?!? Yes, I know I'm screaming, but it's driving me nuts!!!!
Viva la revolution....
[Note: I'm not just doing office type stuff either, I'm using Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, iMovie, and inDesign on a regular basis with no troubles]

I just want to say that Warcraft III running under OS X is barely playable on the 500mhz iBook (2001). This is with all the features set to "Low". The poor iBook just doesn't have the graphics power to handle it.
It does considerably better with the newer iBooks. And like everyone else here, I would recommend playing under OS 9.

I'm able to play Warcraft III in OS X fine with my Viewsonic 19" monitor with my iBook 600 (2001). What happens when you try to do the same?

What settings and resolution do you run at? I have a 700mHz iMac and I cannot play in OS X. Even at 800x600 its still unplayable. In 9 however, I can play at 1024x768 with no problems. I can't wait for 10.2.
