My best guess is that Graphsim didn't feel like expending the time and resources necessary to make an update of a very old flight-sim Glide-compatible. Hence, the flat-panel-only option.

Graphsim seems to be putting most of its resources into their (somewhat) newer flight sim, F/A-18 Korea, which is OpenGL-compatible. Fan support probably helps.

Ok, everywhere I read it says that hornet 3.0 supports Glide..... do you need the 'gold' edition or something?

Unfortunately, that won't solve your problem.

I just opened up my copy of F/A-18 Hornet (v. 3.1), which I got for Christmas -- nope, no Glide support. My copy of Hornet came with the Korea "Gold" package, which is the most up-to-date F/A-18 package that Graphsim offers.

The only truly "modern" feature that Hornet has these days is Gamesprocket support. Sorry about that. :^( I guess if you want the eye candy you'll have to get F/A-18 Korea.

There's a difference?

ACK! Ok, WHICH version of hornet has the full 3dfx support? Like the demo? Korea? How big is it? 100 megs? If anyone has this game email me please. Thanks

This might be a long shot, but...

If you have a computer store nearby, check to see if it has the old Korea/Hornet combo for sale -- not the "Gold" package, but the Korea/Hornet combo with the green Korea box and the red Hornet box shrinkwrapped together. (I saw the combo for sale at CompUSA just a couple of weeks ago.)

The red Hornet box *might* contain the pre-3.1 version of Hornet, and that *might* still support Glide. I'm assuming the specs are listed on the outside of the box somewhere.

Dunno for sure, but it could be worth a look. Maybe afterwards you can buy online to save a few bucks.

I thought they released a Glide patch... or was that for OpenGL for Korea or something?
Ca$h, I have both games... I'll check it out for ya.

I checked out the graphics options on my copy of F/A-18 Korea, which is the latest, "Gold" version. This "Gold" version of Korea supports both Glide *and* OpenGL. So Graphsim has put all of its fancy graphics support into Korea "Gold" and left Hornet 3.1 strictly flat-panel.

The Korea "Gold" box is somewhat misleading, I think. Anyone who just casually glanced at the box could easily conclude that Hornet 3.1 also supported Glide. Such is not the case, however.

Good question.

I don't think there will be any dramatic changes for either Hornet *or* Korea.

It appears that Hornet will just piggyback on Korea from now on -- thrown in as a "freebie." There'll be some upgrading of Korea to accommodate updated versions of OGL. As for Glide, well, that appears to be fading into the mists of time. I don't know whether that's good or bad.

I assume that fans will continue to post their own missions for Korea on the Graphsim website and other fanbase websites, thereby adding even more value to the game than it has already.

Other than that? Probably not much will happen. It's the large fanbase that gives Hornet and Korea their sales momentum, so Graphsim doesn't have to work very hard to make its flight sims appealing, even to potential new customers.

Graphsim just lets people play with the Korea mission software, puts Korea and the new missions on a "Gold"-release CD-ROM, throws in Hornet to be nice, and cashes in. Pretty neat trick, if you ask me.

They deserve what they get though - the games brilliant.
I've spent more hours playing that than any other game...

Oh, yeah -- I definitely believe Graphsim deserves every penny it gets from sales of its combat flight sims. I just envy Graphsim its marketing savvy, that's all. lol!!
