I can't answer your question, but I can tell not to get the pro mouse. It's coll that it's digital and all that, but I'll never go back to single button mouse again. Get a multi-button, I have a contour unimouse.

Yes I agree, DO go optical but DON'T go one button. I advise you to look in to the Logitech multi button optical wheel mouse or a Microslop variant.

If the mouse is purely for gaming, a razor boomslang might be a good choice although it isn't optical it has 2000 dpi.

I went from a 3 button ball mouse to the Pro Mouse and love it.
Its awesome.
I recommend it, but definately not for gaming...
What do you use your comp for mainly?

I use my imac mostly for playing Myth II , Combat Mission and using Photoshop to make mods for CM......the modding ..well i spend A LOT of time doing that.....and have found the puck mouse to be a killer on the hands.
I paid a visit to the Apple support site and found that to use the new Keyboard you have to have at least OS9.0.4 whould this also apply for using the mouse????

Thanks for the responses so far

For gaming I've found that optical mice aren't responsive enough. Their sampling rate is too low, so when you flick the mouse really fast, it doesn't register the movement. This sucks for gaming. If you look at the top gaming mouse, the boomslang razer, it uses a ball.

I'd go for a good two button ball mouse with scroll wheel for gaming. With all the hype over optical mice you can get a great ball mouse for cheap.

Nope, it doesn't.
Use it on any USB equipped computer with the right drivers.

You don't need drivers for the Pro Mouse. If your computer works with the puck, the Pro Mouse will work fine.

My name's ...uh... it's a bummer man.

Yeah, I said that in the eventuality someone wanted to use it on say a wintel or something. As long as they have the HID drivers...
(it will work on any Mac that comes with USB)

Pro Mouse= crap.

Get something with more than one button. Having one button is like having a car that can only turn in one direction, or maybe only one pedal. BLECH

Actually the new 3rd gen opticals are bad at all for gaming.

I'm blazing through Quake 3 Team Arena with Microsoft's new low end 3-button wheel optical (30$ at CompUSA) and it's fine.
Even sweeter with the software USB OverDrive (versiontracker.com to find it)

I know what you're talking about, happens here at work with the Intellimouse Explorer. (1st gen) A flick of the rest = DUH to the mouse. That doesn't happen with the newest batch of mice.

Has anyone gotten the mouse wheel to work in Quake 3? I using the Logitech Mouseman with the MouseWare drivers. Does USB Overdrive fix this or is this an Inputsprocket problem?

Thanks,

Brett

just to be anal : I have plugged my puck mouse into my brother's wintel laptop, and in ten seconds it identified the type of device, found a generic mouse driver which it could use, and the mouse was working just fine. uplugged it, plugged it back in, still fine. so your first comment was actually accurate and the "clarification" an obfuscation.

hehehe

Optical mice aren't any good for gaming. Their sampling rate is too low, so when you move the mouse really fast over a large distance, it doesn't read the movement. This is no good for action games...the screen jerks and you wind up getting fragged. The best gaming mouse available, the Razer boomslang, is a ball mouse because of these problems with optical mice.

The cool part is that ball mice are cheaper now, so you can get a nice two button + scroll wheel ball mouse that will rock for gaming.

Hahaha
Its really not that bad...

I don't getcha... I never corrected myself
It will work on any comp with USB and the right drivers... you proved that. THe PC had the HID drivers...
I made the same statement again, giving a reason for it.
