I upgraded to OS 9.1 today and now the Game Sprockets are not accessible by any game. Period. I verified my copy of 9.04 against 9.1 and all the same control panels and extenstions are there (OS 9.1 adds more...). But when I load up my favorite game, Unreal Tournament, I can't move at all. So I try to modify my mouse settings and this is what it says:
"You have no configurable devices!"
Now, I have a few mice laying around and I tried them all (4). I have a Kensington Turboring(sucks), a Kensington Orbit(rocks, please make a laser version), an Apple iMac puck, and the new Apple clear plastic thing. I reinstalled all my mouse software as well as the latest set of sprockets and still have the same problem. I even tried out the USB Overdrive software. Nothing.
OS 9.1 is just a few weeks old, so I'm hoping more people have this trouble (that would mean I'm not alone).
I do know that Apple plans to cancel Game Sprockets. They simply are not there in OS X - so maybe OS 9.1 simply ignores the sprockets for greater compatibility while under OS X. I'm making half assed guesses because I have a NEW OS 9.1 partition and an OS 9.04 partion with the same set of mouse and sprockets extensions - but OS 9.1 won't recognise them.
I'm not happy...

Sorry if these sound like really stupid questions, but...
Have you tried rebuilding your desktop?
Did you check in Extensions Manager to make sure that the HID extensions are on?

Yes. I just tried rebuilding the desktop without success. I also verified that the HID Library *is* in the extentions folder and *is* selected.
I'd feel better if you told me what OS you're running. This is getting on my nerves, I can't stop trying to debug it...

That's odd I'm on 9.1 and have been playing UT like there's no tomorow and have had no problems except for the fact that the finder asked me to close my pop up windows twice when exiting UT. I f i were you I would dissable ALL mouse drivers and get USB overdrive it works great! well that's all i can see for now I really can't see what the problem could be regarding the rest.Just a half assed guess: try creating a speciall set of extentions for games...maybe...
Did you check for extentionn conflicts??
Sorry if this wasn't much help
Best of luck,
Jean-Loup

Nice. I live in Montreal too.
I'll go to the bare bones extention set and build it back up...

Found it.
Virex version 6 and Norton Utilities 6. I turned them both off and everything works now. I haven't tried to see which of these two i the problem but I turned both off and I can now play Unreal Tournament.
Thank the gods of foreplay, and condemn Symantec...
PS: Look for BUSHWHACKER in UnrealTMNT- that's me.

two ways to get GameSprockets:
1. go to apple.com. click the "Support" tab at the top. click the "Software" link on the next page. search for your software title
you will get to: http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/artnum/n11564
-or-
2. go to versiontracker.com. enter sw title in the search field at the top on the right and click search
you will get to: http://versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=333
versiontracker is great. it keeps a record of every release of every piece of software written for the Mac.
