Can anyone with the jaguar builds comment on game speed? In particular WC3 and UT. I am hoping that 10.2 will actually allow me to stay in X full time. Thanx.

Don't mind UT. It still need lot of works. She is extremely busy with other projects so don't hope UT to be finished anytime.

I'm looking forward WC3 with Jaguar

I asked Glenda Adams (Westlake Interactive president) on the comp.sys.mac.games.action newsgroup about UT X progress and she answered that Jaguar will offer new features that will help her improve UT X so she will make it better then.

Read it on IMG. It was a daily news story, so you might need to do a search if you want to read it. Said nothing more than id has it running on Jag, and they are impressed with the OS. BRING IT ON!!

About WC3 and D2... ?
Can't one of you guys just test? D2 even has a built-in framerate tester (type "fps" in the chat field).
Be happy.

What system are you running? I've heard different stories. Most say that WC3 on 10.2 is on par with 9.2.

I don't read anything from anyone without a post count of at least 150... by then they get all of the "hey, look at me, LOOK AT ME!!" out of them...

Anyway... (back on topic)

I will say that OS 10.2 (the version at the Apple Store) didn't seem all that much faster then 10.1.5 at home... then again, I don't own a 17" iMac with 10.1.5 on it to give it a fair review... The OS did seem much more polished and smooth...

I'm sure some things will be MUCH faster, and other things will be around the same... Ugh, is it the Aug. 24th yet?

That may be the most arrogant thing I've ever read. Yes, my post count is lower than yours. However, I read this board extensively to learn from the community. The fact that I, or anyone else, has posted only a few times under a particular screenname means nothing. It denotes neither lack of maturity nor intelligence.

Post count is like penis size, comparing is childish.

I may not post much, but I have been here for quite a while. Just look at my registration date. I post at Arstechnica because unlike here it is not a big circle jerk Mac love fest.

Anyway I have a Flatpanel 800Mhz iMac. WC3 still has the slight pauses when scrolling around. Gameplay gets choppy even in small battles. Under MacOS 9.2.2 it only gets choppy in mid to large battles.

But it's too bad that it still has to be run in software mode. Maybe 1.10 patch will fix it.

When is that coming?
D2 won't let me set to software mode in fullscreen, and 2FPS != playable.

Broodwar seems to have died in 10.2 for me. I can get as far as choosing a map, then I get all kinds of fatal errors and it unexpectadely quits.

Anyone else playing Starcraft in jag? I like WC III, but 90 units just doesn't cut it for me.

D2 produces bad framerates on my Cube (500/256/Radeon 7500) in OS X. However, I KNOW that there will be a considerable jump as soon as my Ultimate Power Mac G4 arrives...heheh

If WC3 is choppy on a new Mac running Jag, no one is going to be too excited about Doom III. Unless you have a dual 1.4 ghz Powermac with the Ti 4600, you're going to be hurting with that game.

WCIII became choppy for me when I upgraded to 10.2, it smoothed out quite a bit when I turned off shadows.

I'm running a 933 with a gig of ram and Geforce 4 mx (64mb).

Still can't get broodwar to run, even with a clean install, I think a may have patched it wrong tho, so I'm going to try again tonight.

For me UT is definitely worse in 10.2. Especially in large maps frame rate is considerably lower.

Hope next preview is improved.

hmm. I can run D2 in software mode at 800x600 on my tibook 667 (non-DVI). when I installed Jag, I wiped the drive, installed, then drug D2 and its associated files back to the hard drive.

Yea WC3 is very slow in 10.2.1. I have an iMac G4800 with 512MB and the games is as choppy as hell. I have to boot into nine to play it. I emailed blizzard about it though. They told me that they knew of the bad performance and now that 10.2 is out they are working on a patch. V1.10 of WC3 should bring performance up to par with 9. I don't know when we will see it though...
The good news is that Myth 3 works great now. It was choppy and crashy in 10.1. So I have been playing that some instead. Myth 3 is actually a ok game.

Re Warcraft 3: Warcraft kills your video card period. All of those imac's with GF2 MX's can barely handle it, not for lack of CPU but because your stuck with the GF2MX. It just sucks.

Re Diablo 2: If you have a Nvidia GPU your ****ed. Run in software mode, and pry for driver updates to fix this problem. Or get a ATI card....

Re: Warcraft 3; if it plays alright in OS 9 but not in OS X then it's not really a CPU problem. Granted a faster CPU would solve it, but since booting into 9 makes it playable then they should be ok computer-wise.

The Built in Geforce2MX is not the problem. WC3 plays great under MacOS 9.2.2 on my 800Mhz iMac. WC3 Plays even better on my Nforce based PC with built in Geforce2MX. It is a MacOS X and WC3 problem.

Yup. Again, WC3 works fine in OS 9 with my 700mhz LCD iMac. It's just really bad under X. I don't know exactly where the problem lies but I hope it gets fixed soon. I hate booting into 9.

Meh, I always boot into 9 to play UT since X performance and input response have always been bad for me. I run UT on the highest settings/best resolution in 9 with no problems but in X it's kinda slow.

WC3: 800/medium-low on X runs about as well as 1024/high in 9 for me.

In 9, I run wc3 at 1024*768. In X, I can't even run at 640*480 without it becoming choppy .

Warcraft III is playable on my G4/400 (1.5GB RAM, Radeon 8500). When I was still using the Rage Pro 128, it was barely playable, even at 640x480x16. But with the Radeon card, I can play games at 1024x768x32, all visual configs enabled. The game can be a bit choppy, especially with large battles, but I needn't boot into Mac OS 9 anymore just to play.

Speed is far faster on Mac OS 9, however. Performance at higher resolutions in Mac OS 9 are more or less equivalent to lower resolutions in Mac OS X.

No, it did not get hotter and I still consider it as slow under OS X.
