A plane takes off at dusk, and ascends to approximatly 20,000 ft.... there are no clouds in the sky, and the stars are incredible.....
the back of the plane opens..... skydivers jump.... they get into formation, whip out some motherf*cking titanium powerbooks with Airport installed and play a quick game of quake 3 while freefalling.
Now, tell me. Is that not the coolest mac commercial idea you've ever heard of??

Ha! That is a good one.
I have always wanted to see Apple show how people are using Macs. I am a freelance graphic designer and I have worked in countless design firms/ad agencies/marketing communications firms/ publishing companies/ commercial printers etc. and people are doing alot of really great things using Macs. Back a few years when everyone was saying Apple is dying, I was like no way, because they were being used everywhere I worked. If only Apple could get that message to the non mac community (stuff like on the "Creative" part of the Apple website, ie: Apple's Media Arts). We Mac users already know it.
I do like your idea, Apple is due for a new marketing campaign and I hope it's something cool.

Wow. That's actually a REALLY GOOD AD IDEA.
Seriously... is there some way you could submit that to Apple?

Dude, that's a frickin' sweet ad idea! I like it a lot. Mac could really use a new, more agressive ad campaign. Forget all these artsy, stylistic crap, let's get some good ads that really show off what can be done with a Mac! I don't buy a computer for it's looks! I buy it for what it can do! Show me what it can do!

If you submit the idea to Apple or their ad agency (Chiat/Day) and they accidentally read it, there's no way in hell that the commercial will ever be made. They can't accept ideas like that due to copyright concerns, threat of legal action, etc.

So, basically don't think of any more ads because in the off chance that one of the ad dudes read these threads, then they can't use it. And since we all come with such fabulous ideas, I would hate to see us ruin all of Apple's chances for a cool new ad campaign. . .<sigh>

Here's an alternate one. Three guys jump out. One has the TiBook strapped on. They other has one of those Cannon DV cameras. They are shooting video of the third guy doing tricks or whatever.
By the time they hit the ground the video had been edited and is ready to go.
This add idea is free to use by Apple computer

Scott,
Now THAT would be sweet indeed.
You know, speaking of accidentally taking ideas away from Chiat/Day, I wish that it was possible to sign up on some kind of list where Chiat/Day or even Apple could use our ideas for free. We'd just sign a little form saying that they could use anything that we thought up and submitted to them in a certain pre-defined way, and then they could use us for free market research.
Not only is that worth a lot, but it would give the addicts like us a way to know beforehand which way the companies might go...

Both excellent ideas.
But Cash's would appeal to a direct audience, the gamer. Those daring enough to skydive, or think they are. Commercials have to be succinct to get the message thru ... this would say: 1) Young techies, here is your computer. 2) There are too good games on the Mac; 3) Airport rocks 4) we're cooler than you.
To finish it off, they could land, and all three start walking past a house, parachutes billowing behind them, sunglasses on... and thru the window of the house, you can see some nerdy guy sitting in front of a PC. heh heh.
I like it. I see no reason why Apple couldn't use this idea, they'd have no problem with copyright if they gave Cash a small sum for it--say, a dollar. Since he's an evangelista, and wants some fame, he'd go for that...

Ca$h does not own a copyright sanctioned by the US government on that idea, therefore he can not sue Chiat/Day if they wanted to rip him off for it.
Ca$h- that idea is awesome!

I KNOW! I was talking to bizz about it a few months back, when airport was avail on iBooks and stuff. See, he sent me a picture of him playing Q3 on some hiking trip in the mountains, and I thought; why not a step further? So, I think freefalling and playing Q3 or UT would just freaking OWN.
HEY APPLE! PLEASE CONTACT ME TO SETTLE LEGAL STUFF! Its OBVIOUS THIS IS A GOOD IDEA!

But Cash's ad would pedal the Mac as a gaming platform, and everyone knows that while it may very well be (in some senses of the phrase), it doesn't hold a candle to PC gaming.
I think Scott's idea is better.

OK now... let's not argue about whose idea is better or worse. Maybe we should just petition Apple to have an entire series of commercials surrounding how skydivers can use their computers during free-fall. Maybe one with balancing checkbooks, one sending an e-mail to Grandma, one putting files on a zip drive... Exciting stuff.

All cool ideas, but I'll just say something about the copyright thing ! You can't copyright the concept for an advert. People have tried, and it's never worked. So if you're talking to someone about an advert and an idea you've had, and they nick it...nothing you can do. So, Apple can use your ideas.....and anything here about the adverts can be used to ! Unless you actually go and make the advert first.....there ain't no copyright issues to deal with ! See.....television does teach you stuff !

The only problem with ca$h's idea is that the video acceleratior in the TiPB sucks. If it had an M4 with 32 MB VRAM, or a GeForce2 Go, then it would be a different story. But a Mobility 128 with 8 MB? Give me a break! People would laugh. HELLO APPLE!!! PUT IN A BETTER VIDEO CARD SO YOU CAN USE COOL IDEAS LIKE CA$H'S!!!

So? Its still got game. Rage Mobility 128s aren't THAT bad for laptops; most laptops have that card in them. So ... if you were to say "BLAH BUT THEY SUCK AT GAMING" my response would be "duh, its a laptop...., but it CAN game... and it can play decently too. "

That's the greatest mac ad idea! I love it! Hows this for a twist:
Apple uses the ad to toute altivec. The Titanium Powerbooks all are running altivec enabled quake 3. Three guys jump out, with TiBooks, and one guy with a PC laptop. The three guys with macs have a great time and framerates are flyin', but the wintel guy has lower framerates adn too much lag--so he starts fretting and cursing....then the wintel laptop crashes; the guy gets all flustered and forgets to pull his chute in time....THHUMPH! He hits the ground and its game over! The three TiBook users walk away to finish up their game...
Apple wouldn't make any of these ads, unfortunately. I don't think it would fit in well with Goldblum's dancing macintosh ads. I don't think I remember Apple ever having such horrible ads as now.

It's not a bad idea Ca$h - but I can tell you from experience that it'd be tough to do.
I did a spot two years ago for a large unnamed cell phone manufacturer that also (occasionally) makes Power PC processors. The spot had two guys on a airliner who are told they can't use their phones on the plane - so they jump and access email and stock quotes and stuff on the way down.
We used a couple of X-gamers who shoot these things for a living and just holding the phones on the way down was tough. Powerbooks would be a b*tch. You'd want to do it with studio inserts and a small fortune in post effects.
Probably cost a bunch more than Jeff Goldblum on a white sych wall

Eh, I don't think it'd be that hard. Ever seen those portable freefall things they have at fairs? Big ass fan underneath you, it makes you hover in an inflatable cylinder? Do that...use some wires to stabilize them a bit.... then shoot some footage of real skydiving.... bluescreen...viola.
If you think its that tough, convince apple to give me a few powerbooks, about 10,000, a firewire vid camera, and imovie- and I'll do it myself. HEhe
