Quake in dedicated mode?

Ok well I have been trying for a few weeks now to get Quake runing in dedicated mode by holding option down and starting quake and puting in -dedicated. But it just freezes on loading. I tryed this on a friends mac and it crashed on it two. Force quiting DOES work but.

Anyway can anyone tell me how to get in running in dedicated mode I would be very happy. Thanks!
