Those guys that brought us Cocoa Quake have brought us Cocoa Quake II: http://www.fruitz-of-dojo.de/php/download.php4?dlnr=6
It's about half the speed of the OS 9 version on my machine (67.3 vps vs. 128.3 fps), but it's pretty cool that they got it up in a week or so.
Maybe they need some PPC assembly in there to help speed it up some...
Actually, if the Contraband MacQuake2 source release has some PPC assembly they can borrow, we can have a big Cocoa vs. Carbon argument! Oh joy!

Yeah, I'm thoroughly excited that Quake II made it to the Mac OS. I loathed having to wither run it from Classic or booting into 9 itself just so I could use it.

Yeah, this is awesome. Q2 is one of my all time favs. I shot away hours and hours fragging my dorm-mates when I first got to college. What a sweet game.

About the speed complains:
First: Windowed mode is allways slower than fullscreen mode, since no page flipping will be used. In fullscreen mode the fps will be clamped to the refreshrate of the display.
<Quake I>
Because of a performance issue with the current OpenGL drivers I had to use GL_RGBA textures for lightmaps instead of GL_LUMINANCE. GL_RGBA textures are usually slower and consume more VRAM than GL_LUMINANCE textures, but with the current GL drivers the GL_LUMINANCE textures are slower. [you can try GL_LUMINANCE textures by starting Quake with the option "-lm 1"].
<Quake II>
Again a performance issue: Lightmap rendering with the ARBMultiTexture extension is dog slow. I had to disable it.
I'm currently in contact with Apple and ATI because of this and other bugs with the OpenGL drivers.
Things that are in work for Quake II v1.0.1:
<1> compatibility with classic Quake II saved games.
[Quake II saves the compilation date of the gamelib into the saved game to determine the version. If the compilation date is newer, you are out of luck. I'll change the saved date to the date of classic Quake II].
<2> console command to force 16bit OpenGL display.
<3> console command to disable OpenGL VBL syncing.
<4> include the Action Quake 2 game plug-in.
If you have any wishes for v1.0.1, let me know...

I have not tried using the Quake II mods yet, so I have not run into any of those problems yet. Thanks for the updates, though. I'll keep you posted in this forum, or if you have eMail, I'll drop you a few lines. My favorite mods are Action Quake 2, Cry Havoc, and Weapons Factory.

I think the original MacQuake2 port still has issues with multitexturing and ATI cards, so that bug has existed in the OS 9 drivers as well Why not add the VBL syncing option as a menu option as it is in the OS 9 version?

Has anybody experienced a sound problem while playing Quake II for OS X? My copy of Q2 has a static-like sound every time I hit a key (or do something). Could be a problem with my current version.

Regarding the sound problems: Set the sound quality to "high" at the options dialog and everything should be fine.

You mean, does it just not start up? Or does it crash when it opens?

I can start it up, but I can't see the id logo, it's just a white screen...so I hit escape and get to the games menu...then whenever I try to actually start a new game or load a saved game, it immediately quits to the desktop.

Delete the config file and try again. Might be some strange setting in it causing your problems.

I only began playing 1st-person shooters around the time of UT/QIII: what's with using the keyboard to look up or down? I'm using WSAD as directional keys: any suggestions on how to map look up/look down?
Cheers.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."

Don't worry about look up/look down. Continue using your mouse for that. Pretend Look up and look down via keyboard never happened...

I put Quake 2 v1.02 on both my iBook/600 and on my G4/450/Radeon, and it works great on both once you set the sound to high quality. You can't play Quake games without a mouse, so the iBook is a challenge, but it works great.
