I have a dual 450 G4 with ADC RADEON and as soon the nVidia GeForce2 Ultra for Macintosh comes out, will use that card. Anyways, I have not been that satisfied with RAVE performance, with it's software T&L which is worse than most software T&L and does terrible lighting transformation and looks totally demented. Also, I get a poorer frame rate than one of my friends with his Wintels. Anyways, I wanted to try out OpenGL. I tried many times in the past and it hasn't worked, mostly because I haven't been able to extract the files. First, I would like to know how to install 436 Unreal Tournament OpenGL edition properly. Secondly, I would like a link to just the application, and ini files to be able to use Unreal Tournament 436 OpenGL or have it e-amiled. :-D
Thanks,
Norman Phillips, Jr.

You don't need a separate app to run UT in OpenGL...the disc has a "note about OpenGL" or something similarly titled, which explains how to do it. All you need to do is open your UT.ini file and change the driver info from Rave to OpenGL. If you can't find the info, I can paste the commands here from my own (sorry I can't do so right now; I keep UT on my big FireWire drive due to lack of space on my PB harddrive, which is not here).
You also have to allow UT about 140 MB of RAM in OpenGL, and the less physical RAM you have, the more you have to rely on Virtual Memory, which really slows things down.

Check your "Extras" section on your original Unreal Tournament CD for the OpenGL app and instructions on how to configure it.
And if you're looking for speed, OpenGL is not the way to go in UT. It's got better particle effects and lighting in some cases but in my expierence has been much slower. My impression is that it was kinda thrown together at the last minute for fun. That's on a Rage128 Pro though.

I'll save you the trouble of trying: RAVE is faster. I tried Open GL on my G4 powermac with over 200MB RAM allocated to UT, and I still obtained much lower framerates with open GL. RAVE is the way to go. Some say that its because on the mac RAVE is more refined than Open GL. I don't know about this because Quake in Open GL runs faster than UT in RAVE or even Glide. So my opinion is that Open GL is optimized well on the mac and it's UT that is poorly optimized for both RAVE and Open GL. Either way, it isn't worth the trouble of trying UT in Open GL.

I have to say that OpenGL runs pretty well on my G4 533 with UT, but definately not as fast as Rave. While we all crave higher FPS, there is a point at which the difference is no longer perceptible to the eye. Playing UT in OpenGL at 640X480 is still very enjoyable, and I do like the visual effect.
I downloaded the new maps and skins from the UT site, and have noticed some hiccup thereafter...Anyone else?

It turns out the latest version of UT supports OpenGL- you don't need a second app. Download the latest version and look at the readme for how to configure the .ini file for GL.
