I have finished all game modes except Assault. Each time
I play the second level (high speed train) the picture freezes and
the music stops, and I have to reboot the computer (Ti 400, 384MB, VM off)).
I tried reinstalling UT (game of the year edition), but to no avail.
has anybody else run into this problem / Any remedies for
it ? Any help is greatly appreciated as it starts to get annoying.
Thanks
\

Check your ram allocation for the application under "get Info" If you have not upped it already I would suggest doing so. The normal allotment can be too small sometimes.

I have alloted more than 200MB for UT only, with VM turned off
and no other programs running, no peripherals attached either.

Strange, I heard of that problem before, but I don't know if the person fixed it, or what the person did to fix it. I've had no problems like that.

Do you have the most up to date version of UT... I believe the latest version is 436. I would think the game of the year edition would be at 436.

What type of 3d rendering are you using? RAVE? OpenGL?

I have version 436

RAVE rendering

ATI Rage mobility card.

It is also very strange that once the game is frozen, the sound
gets quieter, but rather slowly, so that I have sound for a longer time
than the picture.

It is as well bizarre that I have this problem exclusively in the
second level of Assault, all other levels were very smooth
with no problems whatsoever. The freeze-ups occur sometimes
after one minute of playing, or after 3 to 4 minutes, it varies from time
to time. It does not correlate wither with a specific scene in the
game.

It would really be a bummer if I could not finish this awesome game !

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Hmmm, that's the EXACT problem my brother has on his G4 Cube. Same level, always freezes either immediately or within a few minutes...

I got him the cube for his birthday, and he's enjoying it except for that..

I'm looking for a solution, I'll post here if I find anything out.. Post here or email me if you find out anything too...

Thanks

Damn, I'm getting this problem too.
Only on that one level.
The game freezes but the music just keeps going.

Coincidently, you dont have to restart. Just do command-power button (on keyboard) and type G FINDER and hit return. Spits you back to the Finder.

But that doesn't quite solve the problem

I used to have this exact same problem on my G4/400 but can't remember how I got rid of it... sorry that isn't very helpful. But i did get rid of it so there is hope.

Do you have any mods installed?

I would just try reinstalling it clean and updating to the latest version.

Yeah, this is on a fresh install.
GRRRR.
ah well, i'll reinstall again later.
it wouldn't have anything to do with the .ini files would it?>
cos when i reinstalled, i used my old ones.

i'll use fresh ones.

It may well be the ini files - do a totally fresh install, and ditch the existing preferences files too.

Everyonewho's has this problem, post the length of time it takes to crash on starting this level and where on the train you are at.

I think it's safe to say that it's a software problem associated with UT. We all know about the sound problem. It's just this level though. It may be usefull to see if PC users are having the same problem since the maps used are from the same files.

For me, it stops if I try to do the level in a particular way. It's as I reach a carriage. Can't remember which one cause I've since got past it. It also crashes near the beginning if I go to the back and then come back up to near the same point.

ok open the unreal tournament.ini file, scroll down to RaveDrv. RaveRenderDevice change TextureComposite to True, and MipMaping to True, that should do it

Ihad the same problem with the train until I installed a vooDoo2 card. Previously I would also freeze about the third game into a session and sooner on the train. I havent had a freeze with the new card.

Well I trashed UT and reinstalled. mmmmm, fresh ini files

It still freezed on the train level. grrr.
so i turned the music off for some reason, and it worked okay. (but i lost)
next time, it froze.
the time after that, it worked, and i won. woooooo!

so, if anyone's having trouble try turning off the music.
if that dont work, i dont know what will.

I just encountered the exact same problem at various spots on High Speed Assault. I've also hit a bug on that level where the walls stop moving, and another where there is a regular stutter throughout gameplay. The rest of the game is perfect. I tried the .ini fix listed above; it still crashes but less often.

I have an iMac revB, 160mb, and a Gamewizard Voodoo2 card. Newest versions of software across the board.

Personally, I think this is a specific bug in the level but I haven't seen any patches or word from the maker.

I have a brand new iMac 500 with the 16mb ATI card and I have the exact same problem. Random lock ups on the high speed level. Here's the reply I recieved back from the infogrames support:

"Mark,

There has been some know issues with playing Assault - 'High Speed.' Have
you allocated more RAM to the game? This is one of the LARGEST levels that
this game has to offer. and so in requires an immense amount of ram.

Highlight the application and hit Command+i on the keyboard. On OS 8.5 or
better switch General Information to Memory. Change the Preferred Size by
adding 5 to 10MB to the current size (more if you can spare it). 1MB=1024k."

So I'm going to try this as well as the .ini fix. It may not fully correct the problem with this level but hopefully reduce the lock ups to a point where I can get through it and on to the other parts of the game! I'm glad to find out though that it's not my computer that's the problem.

I allocated almost 300 MB of RAM for UT, with virtual memory turned off,
to no avail, the problem persisted.

My solution to the problem was to just keep trying to play the game,
and after several tries I finished the level before the game could
lock up. if your're oersistent you might get lucky as well.

What's the best strategy for getting through this level?

The best strategy to get to the end of the line is too get the jump boots, jump up at the roof, run past the autocannons and when you reach the last trainwagon jump down, hit the switch and then just get in the driver seat You can do it somewhere close to 30 seconds.

For these experiencing the freeze in the high speed level, did you try with VM on ?

Besides, UT runs faster for me with VM on than off... (G4 400/256 MB/OEM Radeon).

I have a problem something like that. When I try to play UT, I can get as far as clicking one thing (One menu, one button, once) and then it freezes. I’ve tried everything but no luck. Everything worked fine before.

I have a G4Titanium 500 with 256mb ram. I play UT v436 all the time, (for hours at time!) sometimes on a LAN, usually on the net over my Airport. I can't remember the last time UT froze, but I clearly remember (back when I was determing the FPS on this computer) that I got a lot of freezes when VM was off. I wonder that even if you have 384Mb, you need some VM. My VM is at 257Mb.

I have a BW G3 with 448MB, using a Voodoo3. It did the same thing for me, too. I hate that train. Eventually I had to turn everything off, set it to 640x480 and just blasted through. Could've been luck. My sister has a Cube and had the same thing happen to her. She eventually made it through, but she used a litte "help."
Hope this helps and you make it, too.

I posted a bout this a while back, exact same problem G4 DP500, Radeon, latest drivers & QT etc. it seems to be completely random, no specific time/area. No amount of reinstall, extensions off, trashing preferences seems to help.
Never fixed it, the only thing you can do is turn on God mode, run hell for leather and try to finish the level before it crashes. Every other level before and after that is perfect.
