hey all!
okay, i was bored one night and decided to dl the wolf mp demo. let me say this first, i'm not a gamer, especially an fps gamer. so i got on a server and started playing...only i don't know what the hell i'm doing! i'm walking around, shooting, other people are talking (i think angrily) to me via chat telling me to 'get going' or 'hurry up' or 'what the hell are you doing?' i'm sure if i could just play single player, i could figure out the game, but can't do that until the game actually comes out.
could you guys give me a couple pointers on what to do? i know, i know, total novice question ...but the mp demo looks really cool, and i want to play on one of the servers, but i feel like an ass getting on one, and people are pissed at me because i'm ruining their game because i don't know what i'm doing
thanks,
tr

*Don't shoot your friends
*Don't get in people's way
*Try being a medic and reviving hurt people
*Play offline on your own lan server to figure out all the nidgets in RTCW
*If you don't know how to do something, ask others on the server, just don't do it constantly.

Don't Panic.
I got an easy start to multiplayer games, because we played Marathon in a classroom with friends.
But I clearly remember the confusion and outsiderness of going online to play Myth with people I DIDN'T know!
After a few hours, you'll start feeling comfortable and even confident about it.
It always helps if you can get some dry practice: you can set up a multiplayer game ('create server' or something) all for yourself, set maximum player number to '1' and just walk around, get to know the map, get to know the 'limbo menu' and learn about the different game play roles.
Learn how to place dynamite as an engineer, how to set off artillery attacks as a lieutenant (hit 'b' for binoculars and press fire) and so on.
After some of this practice, pick a supportive role as a medic, go online and try to keep other players' health bars up. When they're down, follow the symbol on the compass and bring them to life with the syringe. And when you die, take a breath.
Good luck! I find online multiplayer gaming so much more intense and gratifying than any singleplayer stuff - hope you get a chance to feel it, too
J

Train yourself by playing Quake 3. It will teach you to shoot better (and therefore kicking the crap out of your opponents).

Practise aiming at foe's heads. Also, Axis can take more hits as they are wearing heavy jackets.
Learn which weapons are best to use. Different levels require different strategies. You have to know which weapons are best on each level depending on what you want to do.

I think configuration and framerate really make a huge difference in how you do in Internet games.
What kind of computer are you using? Are you using lightmap? If you are, try low graphics settings for a while. It isn't that bad. Smoother graphics mean easier gameplay. Also, an "r_picmip" of 5 makes things a lot clearer; you can make the distinction between enemies and your teammates quicker. That can mean life or death in an on-line match.
If you're on a dial-up Internet connection, there's not much you can do about doing poorly on Internet games. Broadband makes a huge difference in reaction time. Ping times are very important in first-person shooters. A DSL or cable line will usually ping under 80. Dial-up connections ping from 100 to 500 or higher. It all depends on the infrastructure of your location. Italy's network pings as low as 90 milliseconds to games in Germany. In the United States, however, you're lucky if you ping 150 milliseconds.

I remember the time I tried to play UT online from my dialup connection in rural Canada...my ping was about 700. I joined a game, ran down a hallway, and tried to shoot someone with the plasma gun...but got confused when nothing happened when I pressed fire. Then I reached the end of the hallway, turned around, and was hit by my own gunfire.

That's funny!
Connection speed is huge. I have a cable modem and it still is painful compared to playing on my work network. Sometimes I go in at night just to play Wolf.
Be a spectator for a wile. Watch what everybody does (on both sides). As a spectator you can basically fly around and view whatever you want.
I had trouble as I started to. Didn't realize as an engineer I had to drop the dynomite, then crouch and use the pliers to set it.
If you have a quick connection, you get it fairly soon. I totally love Wolfenstein.
If you look, you'll find a server that has nobody on it (# of players is shown next to maximum allowed. Do a refresh if it seems wrong.)
Have fun and don't worry about others. If you tick them off, they'll kick you off and after 30 seconds they won't remember you. To much going on.

It was for me! You know how when you have high ping, there's always a delay between when you fire and when you see your bullets hit the wall? I guess this was just that, taken to an extreme by extremely s**tty phone lines.[/LIST]

Practice makes perfect!
I remember when I first started out, twas back in September when everyone was a newbie. I remember shooting my own team-mates (not realizing the color differences) and getting the docs and running back to my loading craft, thinking we would sail away!

Server-side, I think it's impossible.

Well, maybe I am mistaken, but I remember what happened...that was just a natural interpretation of what happened. Even if I am completely mistaken, it makes for a good story.

Not in the test they don't. I don't have knowledge of the final game, but as it stands on a Mac you're making that up.
TR, the best advice you've gotten is to create your own server. Run around, learn the keys, and learn the map. Figure out which weapons you're comfortable with.
When you're bored with that, go online. I firmly disagree with the advice to play as a medic. The team depends on medics to know what they're doing, and you'll not be skilled enough to deal with only having 1 clip.
Start as an LT. Don't be tossing airstrikes and artillery around. Experienced players hate people who use those indiscriminately. Follow others, and give them ammo when they ask. Know your keys!
The most important thing is not to kill team members. Nothing spoils the flow of the game more.

Tip?
Don't play against me online. I play on a Dual 500 G4 with a T3 as my FAT pipe. My ping is well below 100. Oh, alright here goes some tips.
NEVER STOP RUNNING. VERY IMPORTANT.
JUMP, SLASH AND RUN ALL WHILE AIMING AND SHOOTING.
IT IS BEST TO JUST USE AN MP40 AS AN AXIS SOLDIER AND A THOMPSON AS A ALLIED SOLDIER.
WHEN STUCK WITH YOUR SIDEARM CLICK CONSTANTLY AS YOU WILL FIRE FASTER. THESE WEAPONS FIRE FASTER THIS WAY.
ASK FOR MEDICS. THEY SCORE POINTS FOR GIVING YOU HEALTH PACKS. ASK LEUTS FOR AMMO, THEY GET POINTS FOR GIVING AMMO.
AFTER THE WALL AND SEA DOOR HAVE BEEN BREACHED TEAMS THAT WISH TO WIN HAVE TO SWITCH MOST PLAYERS TO LEUTS AND MEDICS. LEUTS MOST DESTRIBUTE AMMO AND MEDICS MUST REVIVE.
THERE ARE ONLY TWO PLACES WHERE 'NADES WORK EFFECTIVELY. 1) IN WAR ROOM 2) IN SPAWN POINTS.
AS A LEIT, TYPE B THEN AIM FOR SNIPERS QUICKLY. POWDER WILL RISE ABOVE SNIPER AND THEY WILL BE KILLED.
ANY RPGS AT SPAWN POINTS ARE VERY DEMORALIZING. THIS WILL OFTEN CHANGE THE GOAL OF SOME OPPONENTS TO KILL RPGS. THIS WILL GIVE YOUR TEAM A NUMBERS VICTORY GOING FOR THE OBJECTIVE.
ALLIED STRATEGY: IF THEY ARE VERY GOOD IN GUARDING THE BUNKER THEN SEND ALL MEN THE OTHER WAY. SINCE THEY ARE CONCENTRATING ON THE LEFT SIDE THIS OFTEN LEADS TO A QUICK SCORE.
TRY TO SCORE QUICKLY. THE SOONER AN ALLIED SOLDIER MAKES IT TO THE WARROOM THE BETTER THE CHANCES THAT THE AXIS WILL BE SLEEPING.
That's all i could think of right now.

I guess the best tip I can give anyone is that the faster your computer and pipe are the better you will be. FACT.
