I was told somewhere that you could jump higher by pointing the impact hammer at the ground and jumping. Every time I have tried this I have "killed my own dumb self". On most new maps I play on One of my most frantic searchs is for the boots (I find them to help a great deal in outdoor CTF matches.) But seeing as they only get three jumps out of them It is a stuggle to plan jumps accordingly especcially when dodging bullets is every direction. Any tips on this move will be appreciated.

It's been a while since I played UT (too much Q3TA) but here's what my fuzzy memory seems to come up with (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)
1) I think the Impact Hammer has varying degrees of damage depending on how long you hold down. Some jumps don't require full strength and hurt less.
2) Doing it backwards instead of forward hurts less. I'm guess it has to do with going away from the "blast radius" instead of through it.
Hopefully I'm not out in left field on these... don't have UT at work to test.

Hammer jumping is definitely an advanced technique in UT. Very few people use it, but those who do, and do it well, are usually the best players. I've been stupid and have neglected from getting proficient with it. I've only recently started incorporating it with my play.
Basically, what you do is charge up your hammer w/ primary fire, look down at the ground, jump, and as soon as you jump fire the hammer, it will give you a big boost. Yes, you do lose life, but not that much. It may very well be worth it if you need to get some place high quickly.
The best time to use hammer jumping in CTF is when you have the flag and you can't teleport. Examples of how you can use it: Hopping over the sub in November. Hopping over the walls in Lavagiant. Capping the flag faster in Face (on the downslope, do multiple hammer jumps, and you will get home much faster). Exiting enemy base very quickly in Hydrobases (through the hole in the wall in the flak/armor room). There are many other places you can use hammer jumping effectively.
Also, don't forget you can hammer your teleporter to amazing distances (Face is a great map to use this in). I'd recommend thoroughly practice using the hammer jump w/ just bots. Just like using the teleporter efficiently, it can take your game to a whole new level (especially if you often find yourself as the FC).

Lots of the pickups can only be gotton by piston jumping.
just experiment with it.
also, using the impact hammer on your translocator is pretty cool.
example: i think the level is called barricade. not sure though. anyway, it's the big CTF level where there a two forts and a big cliff seperating them. about halfway from the red base to the cliff you can impact hammer your translocator ONTO THE TOP OF THE CLIFF! yeah man! make sure you got plenty of sniper ammo!

It's been months since I played UT, but I used to rock :-)
Anyway, here:
1) Point your hammer straight down.
2) Jump and release at the _same time_
You can also do this on Assault levels like Mazon, Frigate, &c. to get to the objective quickly. You can impact hammer jump to the top of the Mazon fortress. You can backwards jump (run to the edge of the deck on Frigate backwards, facing about 50° downward), and release to get on the ship.
It's more effective to have someone rocket jump you, though.
Practice for a bit in single-player.
Anyway, the translocator impact hop is quite a neat trick, although no one used it back when I played. Basically:
At the top of Facing Worlds, there's that nice sniper section. Drop your translocater near the edge. Stand back with your impact hammer charged. Then crouch down, and release it at the translocater. If it doesn't go backwards, it'll be at your opponents base (sometimes even within the base!), but more often on the side ledges (snipe the spawns at the beginning, and get your team to take the flag).
