I'm a longtime PC quake player that's trying to use a mac. But without the venerable gamespy how on earth do mac players find games? Especially for rocket arena 3 which is the mod I use 97% of the time.

Ra3 usually has an in-game version of game spy, but that doesn't seem to come with the mac version - so what gives?

any help is appreciated.

Try the app called GameRanger.

If you get the team arena expansion pac (just buy the pc one and drag and drop the mission~1 folder into your q3 folder), and select mods and click on the mission~1 option - which gets you into team arena interface, youve got a good little broswer there.

It will let you save a list of favourites just like gamespy, and select only certain game type is you wish.

Alternatively, if you run quake 3 and select the rocket arena mod it logs you directly into the ra3 browser, which will let you ping ra3 games only and save some as your favourites.

These are the two best ways currently.

Gameranger is great, but probably not so good for q3a as they are client games only (kind of like kali).

THere is currently no gamespy equivalent for mac and no intention to build one. IMHO, this sucks ass and someone needs to get their act together to build a macspy. We need it desperately - mac users play games too god damn it!

GameSpy rocks ass. I download a list of 400-500 servers in 15 seconds. With the in-game server finder, master.idsoftware.com only pings a few in 15 seconds.

Rocket Arena 3 is very addicting. The most popular and high-performance server (for the California Bay Area) is TooCool.

The RA3 server is: q3.toocool.com:29666

The CPMA server is: q3.toocool.com:27960

The password to get in, if the server is full, is "urnotcool".

You can do a "/connect q3.toocool.com:29666" and a "/password urnotcool" to use these handy bits of information. They work to connect to any other server if you know the IP and the correct password.

You likely won't have much luck with RA3 for the mac - doesn't work yet. I know, 3.15 is supposed to work. It doesn't.
