I've been playing the 4x4 Evo demo for a while (build 47) and was planning to get it for my birthday in about 5 weeks. I upgraded to OS 9.1 last weekend and have since found that the frame rate has dropped way down. In its current state, I would consider the game unplayable. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

OS 9.1, for me, downgraded my versions of OpenGL and CarbonLib, among other things. Make sure you have the latest version of OpenGL. And if you had virtual memory turned off in the past, installing OS 9.1 turned it on. Extreme framerate drops for me on most games.

Also, what kind of mac are you using, how old, etc?

I played the 4x4 demo on my Titanium 400. The frame rate was rather
low, it was a pain to play.

I'm using an iMac DVSE 400 MHz with 128 MB of RAM. I've since downgraded back to 9.0.4 and the 4x4 framerates are back where they belong (even with VM turned on). Interesting note that 9.1 downgraded several OS components. I'll probably re-upgrade a little more carefully in a week or two and keep an eye on those types of things.

I'm planning to add another 128 MB of RAM when I go X. I'm hoping that will be enough to run 4x4 acceptably in Classic. GK, saying that framerates were bad on your Ti 400 doesn't give me much hope.

Thanks for the feedback. It gives me a lot of good ideas for the next time around.

I upgraded to 9.1 and Evo 4x4 was not working and also my PowerBook 500 DV G3 stopped responding, no matter what I did with the memory allocation. I've got 256 Megs of Ram and not running anything in the background. Help please!!!!!
Also when I do get it working, can anyone post a link to their cheats or how to bring in modified trucks / customs?
Thanx. I'll just have to play with CVGS for now and the Grand Tourismo 2 game!

I upgraded to 9.1 OS on my G3 PowerBook 500 DV. Previously 4x4 Evolution worked on 9.04. After the Upgrade to 9.1 It freezes my PowerBook. The screen dims to black. Then I expected the Game to come on but comes back to the desktop. Couldn't do a thing unless Control, Command Power Button for a full reboot! What do I do? Help. I need a fix for this but can't find the patch for 4x4 Evo Mac version anywhere which addresses 9.1 OS problems. Anyone know where to get the patch?

Have you downloaded the latest patch? If not, go to:
http://4x4evo.godgames.com/support_patches.php

The description is rather vague but it says that "enhancements to OpenGL rendering should improve frame rates on some systems."

The problems you're experienceing sound more serious than a simple patch. Have you tried e-mailing them? Their tech support e-mail is tech@talonsoft.com.

I've seen somewhere that they're hoping to have a carbonized version this summer that will run in OS X. I don't know if that would make the game more playable in Classic (9.1) or not. Did you do any kind of a back-up before upgrading to 9.1? Can you reinstall 4x4?

Oops, my fault, I forgot that after getting 9.1, I also got Command and Conquer and had to bring in the draw sprocket or something like that but its an old version in which the dealer said that its the only sprocket which is compatible with C&C. Then of course I forgot about it for some time and decided to go 4 wheeling in the desert with my Mitsubishi Pajero ($x$ evolution) Darn itt feel like a donkey! Anyway, I replaced the sprocket with the latest games sprocket and back to normal, just that C& C is now unplayable. Doh!! Sorry for all the hassle folks! thanks for the help thought.

These seem to be Windows patches only. Did I miss something?

Lertsiri Boonmee:

You can solve your problem by putting the older version of InputSprocket into the same folder as the C&C app, but keeping the newer version of InputSprocket, the one that works with all the newer games, into the Extensions folder. The C7C app will look first in its root folder, and then in the System Folder, for the InputSprocket extension, so if it finds it in the root folder first it won't check the System. That way, you can run both games at the same time.

henryhbk, you're right. I just got the full version, went to the web to download, and noticed that my first look at the site was rather cursory. It is a Windows-only patch.

On the good side, I'm back to 9.0.4, the frame rates are good most of the time (although the gameplay pauses when the music loop starts again - may have to increase memory allocation) and the Thrustmaster Pro Digital 2 wheel/pedals are great. I had quite a bit of experimentation to do to get them working properly but after only about 1.5 hours of trying different options, I finally got to swap paint on a couple of fast laps. The wheel and pedals make all the difference in being able to fly up to the apex of the turn, mash the brakes, and accelerate out the back side. Yeeehawwwww....
