Well, damnit , as a guy who hates most games, computer and otherwise, I have become a Quake head. The last four or five days... online gaming has slowed to a crawl in terms of sorting low ping "free for all" games. Sorting still shows total servers of 2048. Sorting lately now takes a half hour or more. The last several days I'm only getting games with pings @ 70 or above. I don't even see the usual San Diego death matches or similar area matches showing up. I expect some slowing on weekends and evenings, but on my cable modem, I can usually still find matches with pings @ 15 or thereabouts even at the busiest of times. I have checked my game's network settings, but alas they are fine with them set to "Cable/ISDN/T-1/Lan." Is anyone else having some of the same issues or know of some system wide problem going on with the servers as of late? Any other suggestions?

I am the same way about games. Can't stand them with Quake & UT excluded. I have had the same frustrations with the in-game browser. I have been scanning the planetquake, bluesnews, quake3world message boards and found others out there that share our problem. However, the only solution provided is using GameSpy. No thanks. Don't want to buy a PC to play Quake.

I am on a Dual G4/500 and have tried out to suss out the problem in MacOS 9.1 (every extension combination possible) and MacOS X (which will only run the 1.27 Debug and not the 'g3' beta). Same result. The worst possible servers show up and good ones are gone. I have even reinstalled on a spare 1 gig drive with its own MacOS 9.1 clean install along with fresh internet downloads of all Quake 3/Team Arena upgrades, maps, etc. to no avail.

By the way, I am beginning to hate the number '2048'.

I know all the servers that should be operating are operating through GameSpy's web site but can't get their IP from the site. This in-game browser problem might be related to a "rumored" point release with "tweaked networking" coming next week. But, who knows. I have seen nothing official about the problem myself. But I hear some new .plans were just released from the ID Staff about the new release. I guess you could finger them and find out. I won't tell anyone...

I did figure out one trick! After reading a ton of unrelated messages in my search for a solution, I found the following to help me find the good sites. In the console type:

/sv_maxping 9999

This will allow servers with outrageous pings to show up. Those incredibly high ping servers are sometimes the servers you might have played on before. When you see one you like, highlight it, press server info and get the IP address and Port, write it down and connect manually:

/server xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:XXXXX

Here are a few I have used:
212.137.72.51:27971
192.246.40.159:27961
64.69.92.154:27960

If find any clues yourself, post 'em here. I really miss a few servers I can't seem to find. Another bug I have is that the Team Arena Favorites filter locks up Quake 3. So I can't access them. The cfg file was toasted by my frantic refreshing.

maybe the servers you are looking for still use the 1.27g patch, so you obviously wont see them.
