They don't say much about the actual product. I'd be rather sckeptical about it until I actually saw it used and how it performs for FPS games. Does it give you optimal performance? I see it mention optimizations, what kind of optimizations.

If it works... HOOORAYY! Hopefully it will help port games over to the Mac.

Yeah, it's a little like the previous report about the company that has enabled a translation layer for DirectX allowing Wintel games to be ported quickly to the mac. You can't help but be cautious until you've loaded the game up on your computer.

I know some linux guys who'll love playing Sim city though. ;-)

Tobes.

Very exciting news if its true. I didnt read the detail but they mentioned something about a port of the sims being done in 8 weeks.

If this was "the sims" for mac, why has it taken so long for this product to be announced I wonder.

Anyway, it would be fantastic getting new release games within a couple of months of the pc release on average, rather than only when we are really lucky.

Just think, with reduced cost and time of porting games to mac, and a high growth mac market and mac gaming market (not to mention fast machines) things are looking good for mac.

On the other hand, we are still waiting for the castle wolf patch....

This new porting technology isn't some magic bullet that will solve all the game porting problems.
Porting games from Windows to Linux isn't necessarily a good example of the wonders of their technology. It's a best case scenario at best. The Linux version of The Sims is most likely for x86 Linux boxes. The Mac version has a lot of byte swapping to deal with among other things.
In other forums, this topic has been brought up and one of the big examples is porting a PC game which requires 32 MB of VRAM 200 MB of RAM to a console with only 4 MB of VRAM and 32 MB of RAM available. The basic engine for that type of game would most likely have to be reengineered for the console.

There's some good discussion going on at IMG from some actual game porters:
