How does Quake run on the new SE? Decently, if you have 128mb or 192mb or RAM? Playable, with decent enough graphics, or... ?

Compared to a b/w G3 400, it plays pretty comparibly, especially considering it has half the video memory. But it does have a faster processor, and AGP graphics which I suppose help a lot. The coolest thing about the SE is playing Quake3 on my 27" tv, that rocks!

It plays just fine, about 30 fps at 640 x 480

I've tried it on a iBook SE with only 64 MB -- it's veeeery bad, even at low resolutions. RAM is most important.

Has anyone tried the new 466 iBook DVSE with 192MB RAM and Quake3 NORMAL (640*480*32 no reductions)? That's the amount of memory I need to turn off VM when running Q3A on my iMac. Just curious - especially with the new 8MB iBook graphics.

Also, it would be nice to hear about running the demo with gore turned off (cg_gibs 0). That gids rid of flying body parts when you get blown up - a real drag on the Rage chips. To turn gore back on it's cg_gibs 1. thanx...joe

The new iBooks run Quake a heck of a lot better than the older ones. I would say just as good as a 400MHz B&W G3. Also, it pretty much has the same graphics card. Close to 30 fps.

I think it would be better to use the 800 by 600 setting for this reason: clarity.

The iBook's native resolution is that, and I would think that things would appear much sharper. Then again, the framerate might be a bit lower. On the other hand, since the video card doesn't have to handle the scale from 800 by 600 to 640 by 480, you might get comparable performance.

Playing Quake on my Pismo to my 36-inch FD Trinitron WEGA XBR HDTV (capable - line doubler included) is awesome. Sometimes, I like to relax while I'm posting on the forums. Thus, I connect my PowerBook and sit on the couch, typing away.

Anyway, the iBook is a fine machine. Unfortunately, I am going to switch to Wintel for my primary machine for the simple reason of compatibility. I will use my PowerBook for graphics and Quake, but the Dell I plan on purchasing seems a more solid (chassis-wise) machine. It's a bit more sturdy than the current 'Book.

Good luck with the gaming!
