I am trying to install the Open GL portion for UT, but cannot get it to work!!!!! I copied the openGL.ini file onto my UT folder and changed the 'GameRenderDevice'. When I have completed all the instructions from the OPENGL 'Read Me' and try to load up the game, I get the reply ["CAN'T FIND CLASS IN FILE' CLASS ENGINE_ANIMATION'"] Has anyone been successful in loading this up????? I need to figure this out because I HATE RAVE!!!!!! I have a G4 400 with a Rage 128 PRO. thanks for reading this.

If you've already played UT in software rendering mode, UT will keep right on using that until it's baby-stepped to your opengl engine. Sounds like you installed opengl fine. After you've opened up UT, go to the video section of your preferences. It should give you an option to change the rendering mode. That'll reload UT and should hopefully identify the RAVE option.

When I first started up UT, I didn't move any .ini files or anything to get Opengl to work. You may want to give it a fresh install just in case. Software is so petty.

you hate RAVE enough to boost memory requirements by 10 megs, slow the game down by at least 5 fps, and suffer a considerable loss in stability? wow...that sure is a lot.

To DRUBER: this is the exact intructions for installing the openGL version I got from the 'read me'.

"To install an OpenGL capable version of Unreal Tournament, copy the "Unreal Tournament" application and "OpenGLDrv.ini" file from this folder into the Unreal Tournament folder on your hard disk. Then open the "Unreal Tournament.ini" file on your hard disk and change the "GameRenderDevice=" line to "GameRenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice ".

OpenGL for UT is not "officially supported", and as such has not been highly optimized. Putting aside the debate about whether or not OpenGL is 'slow', expect to give it a lot of extra memory for only a partial benefit.

On the one hand, OpenGL can churn out considerably faster framerates than RAVE. On the other, UT becomes less stable, the graphics are not as good, and on some cards it can lock up (ie get single-digit frame rates).

For example, on my iMac DV SE I get framerates in RAVE of ~ 20fps average. If I switch to OpenGL I can get a much smoother 35fps, providing there aren't more than one or two players on the screen at a time (at which point it locks up). The fact that a lot of extra memory is required and UT does that crashing thing more makes the extra FPS not really worth it.

However, owners of current high-end stuff such as Radeon's report being able to use OpenGL under UT without too many of the above problems, so all you can do is try it and see. If you follow the instructions in the ReadMe, you should be able to get OpenGL UT up and running.

20 fps in RAVE on an iMac DV SE doesn't seem right....can anyone verify this measurement? It could be that there's something wrong with your system, Phorax. Also, what DV SE do you have, the 400 or the 500? Thanks...
