Is anyone out there having issues with the Radeon card? I'm playing Deus ex on a g4/500 with a radeon using a cinema display and i get what can be described as white gridding during the game. I have tried to play in various resolutions and iin both 16bit and 32 bit-- all with the same, reproducible gridding (like I can see the structure beneath the textures). I switched monitors (to a crt), altered the refresh rates...still the same problem. Does anyone have any ideas on what this might be? Could it have something to do with the Radeon drivers?
Thanks,
AMS

I bought the same Mac and I have the same problem. I think about a problem with the driver or maybe the game. We just have to send a report to Westlake Interactive to know if they know about the problem.

Frederic,
I sent an email to Aspyr through their website support section about the problem...hopefully someone will get back to me. I read over on Maccentral that ATI will be releasing the new retail Radeon Mac Edition card with newer drivers the week of the 16th...maybe that will do something?
Are you also getting "gridding" on Unreal Tournament? I'm not getting the patterns on quake3a, but I did get the same white gridding on the Unreal Tournament demo (don't own the actual game). Again, I've experimented with a ton of different resolutions and display configurations...all with no success. : (

Sounds like it's a Westlake or Aspyre problem then, since Deus Ex is built on the Unreal Tournament engine. Maybe I should be weary of buying a Radeon next week...

tassle,
i don't know how wary you should be since I know of a few people with BTO radeons who aren't experiencing problems at all...do you think I should contact Aspyr about this? ATI? Apple? Being a new machine and all, it was a little disappointing to have Deus Ex not work properly.

I have the same issue with a Dual G4 500 and a Radeon. I thought it waas the unreal engine also, but I ran Unreal Turnament and it did not occur. Must be somethignin the game, I updated the game to 1.01 and it still doesn't fix the issue. Hmmm... This is the only game that has render problem. Fame rates are GREAT at 1024x768 though. :-) Impressive card.

The 'gridding' in DE appears to be a RAVE issue with the Glide-favoring UT engine, but I can't compare in UT because my UT CD is whacked!
As for great frame rates? I think it is slow going in 1024x768. I had to drop to 800x600 with many options off/low to see comfortable rates (no numbers to give, just playing it without a 'stuttering' feeling is my goal)
I switched over to my Voodoo3 for UT and DE.
But the Radeon card is a screamer in Q3Arena!! I get 50-70 fps at 1024x768 with some options on full! Q3 games like FAKK2 and Elite Force should play sweet.

I have the same problem with Deus Ex and my Radeon on a G4 500MP. Unreal Tournament works fine with NO issues so it's not the engine. Has to be something with the Rave drivers for Deus Ex. However it runs GREAT. :-) Like this card a lot.

I've recently purchased a G4/533DP with BTO Radeon and it has the same "white gridding" problem with Deus Ex, even after the 1.0.1 update. This is really irritating as it completely ruins the atmosphere and realism of the game!
Any word from Aspyr or Westlake on when they're going to fix it?

Are you guys all using the 1.1.1 version of the radeon drivers? I read on www.xlr8yourmac.com that the white stuff was a driver thing. Check there for more details...

No idea -- I'm just running whatever came with my G4/533DP, so it must presumably be quite recent. I'll have a look and find out...

There was a thread about this before. I had the exact same problems with "white gridding" in Deus Ex. (My system: G4 500MP, BTO Radeon, etc.)
Basically, open up your Deus Ex.ini file and look for the TextureComposite setting. Make sure it is set to True, not False. I changed this setting from False to True and the gridding problem disappeared.
This should clear up any problems anyone is having.

This solved the problem -- thanks!
But out of curiosity, what does TextureComposite do? Is there a webpage that explains these little custom tweaks?

Hi gang, This was not a drive issue, it's a glitch in the UT engine which Deus Ex is based upon. Westlake has fixed this problem in DE with the multiplayer patch. They are going to put the fix into the next updates of UT and Rune which also suffer from the same issue.
Frag on,
Eric
