I sent the following message to tech support but thought maybe someone here may have some insights.

============
I received my Risk II for Mac game and I must say this is one great game! I am curious about a couple of things though; why is it that a full install on my hard drive won't let me play the game without the CD? I don't use the animation at all so I cannot understand why the CD is needed?

I like that I can play the game from the CD if I wish, but don't like that it won't save my game or preferences unless 200-plus MBs of the game is loaded on my hard drive. It seems like such a waste to have to install so much on my hard drive just so I can save my games and prefs. Is there an easier way to save the games and prefs on my hard drive without having to install the entire game? I mean, if I HAVE to have the CD in my CD-ROM drive to play the game then why must I waste so much disk space?

Many games require you to have a CD in order to play. They believe it reduces priacy etc. And to some extent it does. If you could install the full program and not require the CD what you keep you from passing your CD to all your friends who wanted the game etc? On the other hand it does not stop people from burning CD copies but this is negated to some degree by assigning an unique key for each CD which means at least for net play that only one person can use that combination at any given time. I don't know if this is the reason that RISK II requires you to use the CD or not? Just a thought.

I can understand the copyright issue, but it's funny that Beach Head 2000 (also by MacSoft) can be played without the CD. What really "gets" me is that if I run Risk II off the CD itself I can't save preferences or save games in progress to the hard drive. With games like Myth II I can have a minimal install on the hard drive and use the CD while still be able to save games and preferences. Risk II wants me to install a minimum of 200MBs on my hard drive

Maybe someone can help me with this question: how do you save a 16-game tournament? I can save in other single player modes, but can't seem to find a way to do it in tournament -- where one REALLY needs to be able to save seeing as the games can last days

You can play without the CD. Make a disk image with Disk copy. It doesn't need any files, just a locked volume with the correct name. For the tournament games, I agree that you should be allowed to save tournaments in progress. You can save some of the files (I think there are three) from the Risk folder, but it's not the best system.

Hey, is there any way to play Risk II cross-platform? Neither Macsoft nor Hasbro Interactive say anything about it, and games.macnn.com say it's Mac only for mulit-player.

But that just doesn't make sense!! I just ordered it today, but I'm seriously considering going to cancel my order right now....

Don't cancel your order. Accoding to the docs (below) you can play with a PC over TCP/IP.

========
As we strive to maintain compatibility between Macintosh and PC versions of games, and as networked games become more complex, some games are no longer able to support Appletalk networking. Instead, many games now use the TCP/IP protocol, the Internet networking method, to play multiplayer games over a LAN (Local Area Network). TCP/IP, if supported by a game, can also be used to manually set up a game over the Internet.
