First, my system specs:
G4/500 AGP (Sawtooth)
RagePro 128 (Stock card)
1G RAM
MacOS 10.1.5
RtCW 1.3.2
So, ever since the previews of RtCW, I've had this nagging problem. The game boots up just fine. Can set all the settings and whatnot. But when I start the game, as it loads the levels, it will randomly freeze just before it finishes loading. Sometimes it happens on certain levels, and sometimes it doesn't. It seems to be random, since it will freeze while loading a level one time, then if I try again, it will load fine (but then another try, it will freeze). I've tried every different level of graphics settings. So far, I've found that the lowest level ('Fastest') works the best (ie - least amount of crashes).
This is very annoying, since I don't know exactly when it will crash (or what level). And when it does crash, it brings down my whole machine. I can't force quit out of it or anything.
Is anyone else having this problem, or anything similar? I'm totally out of things to try. I really enjoy this game (when I get to a play a level or 2), and I'd like to get this resolved.

I reinstalled it and it now works fine (make sure you ahve the 1.32 patch).
There are a few things that could be going wrong:
: OS issues. Are you running osx 10.1.5? If you arent, upgrade.
: Video driver issues - which video card do you have? Ati drivers in particular are prone to corruption. On the cd itself is the latest ati drivers for radeon cards etc. Gforce 2mx is included in mac osx 10.1.5.
: Failing those two things, i would suggest backing up your data, reinitialising your hard drive and installing mac os and rtcw again.
Failing these three things, could you please post your exact machine specs and we will try to work it out for you

I also found an app called Escape Pod, that is supposed to force quit you out of those situations where you can't do the usual force quit. But it doesn't work with RtCW
Oh well. Maybe when I get a new video card, all will be well.

Hard to say exactly what the problem is then. I somehow doub its a hardware issue, if you arent having problems outside of that app.

You may be running into the Sawtooth crash that myself and many others have experienced. Anything graphically intense will cause a crash and looping sound, forcing a reboot.
Diablo, Red Faction, RtCW, Unreal Tournament, ... they all do it
I had the crashes with my ATI 128, and I still have them with my Radeon. No known fixes.

i had no problem running RtCW with my original Rage 128, and i definitely have no problems running it with my Radeon 8500.(note: this card ROCKS!!! ) i'm running just about the same setup:

For Red Faction and UT, I have had the exact same crash as you describe. Full lock up, with a looping sound. I have given up on those games under X (for now). RtCW on the other hand is a bit different. It only crashes while loading a level (so there's no sound to loop).
Sounds to me like this is an isolated problem, but also very vague. I will try getting a new video card (when the Mac Ti's are for sale), and when 10.2 comes out, I'll be wiping my drive. Maybe then I'll be able to play these games!

I have the exact same problem.
G4/400 2xAGP (Sawtooth)
RagePro 128 (Stock card)
448 RAM
MacOS 10.1.5
RtCW and Red Faction both crap out on me. With RtCW it is some time in the level loading sequence. With Red it is some time through the training exercises - a minute or two into the game.
I am afraid it is because I have a 2X AGP slot and I am afraid this will never get fixed due to Apples consistency for abandoning it's aged hardware.

And the Mac Ti's don't look like they'll work in 2X AGP (and they are way too expensive for me), so I think I may get a Mac GeForce3 and see if that helps. Something's gotta work!

Well, the box says you need to have at least a Radeon or Geforce 2MX -- my guess is that your 128 is the problem.

Ok, so I got a GeForce3 (PC version flashed to Mac), and I ran a quick test of RtCW. Seems like the hard locks are gone, and I can run in 'High Quality' mode with no probs. (before, I could only get it to work in 'Fastes' mode)
So it seems it was the card.
