I read in a recent post that the use of some illegal crack will make playing games on my PB better - or at least enable me to play them w/o the disk. This sounds great but what the hell *is* crack and where can I get some? I have Alice and Pro Pinball (F.J.) and would really like to be able to run them w/o the disks. I checked out a link about creating a "disk image" (provided by xyber233) for doing this w/ UT in another thread, but there were very specific items that needed to be moved around that appear to be unique to UT.
Can anyone tell me where I can find some patches (or cracks???) for Alice and ProPinball? I legally own the games, but I don't want to be carrying around the disks. A reasonably detailed explanation about how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated as I'm a little sketchy on my understanding of creating and "mounting" images, etc., but I'm willing to learn Thanks, T.

Making disk images of cds is very easy:
1. Insert the CD
2. Open Disk Copy (comes with the OS), & select "Make Image From Disk" in one of the menus
3. Select the CD in the window that opens up
4. Select the folder to save the disk image to (u need about 650MB of hard drive space per CD image)
5. The disk image will be created, & it will mount a virtual copy of the cd on the desktop.
6. To use the disk image, simply open it, & it wil mount the virtual CD on the desktop, & u will be able to run the program as if the cd is in the drive.

When I first read your post and saw "illegal crack", I was going to go into my whole Nancy Reagan "just say No routine." I was also going to make a comment about playing a game with your crack exposed (ex: plumbers crack) would not increase the game playing experience and it would also be a bit drafty.
Sorry, working late on the Friday before a long weekend here in the US.

Sorry about the confusion BTW, as I am just through the tunnel (or over the bridge) I believe that technically I am still in the US. Anyway, I have followed "Some Guy In Africa's" advice perfectly about six times, but it still won't work. Here's what I got:
Alice: Created "Alice.img" just fine on my desktop. Then, double clicking it creates an "Alice" floppy disk looking icon. Then Double clicking my Alice application starts to launch the app, but then it won't fully load and I am back to my desktop! I think I have plenty memory: 256 meg RAM on PBG4 (Alice is set to 145,000 minimum and 155,000 preferred). What gives???
Quake3 Arena and ProPinball: Both give me an error message (I think "-32" or something) when I am trying to create the image w/ diskcopy. Hence the file never appears on my desktop at all. Tired it 2 or 3 times and nothing.
Does anyone know what's up?
Has anyone had success with these specific games? Thanks, T.

Alice will not work the way you are trying to make it work. It's called, quite simply, 'anti-piracy protection'. No way around it, at least not yet. Quake 3 should not require a CD in the drive...mine never has. Try updating to the newest version. Dunno about Pinball.

crack will not work, but maybe speed.
seriously, cracks are hacks for programs, which will alter the game. It will usually make it so that if you have a full install, you won't need the cd, making piracy that much easier. Or it will let you play without a valid serial number/cd key. Not recommended, as the hacks destabilise games, and bring the mac gaming market down.
The best way to speed up loading etc. is to take the game cd, and make a disk image as previouly mentioned. It will cut out the cd loading. you are doing something wrong if the image doesnt work. Just drop the cd on diskcopy, make sure it's on "read-only compressed", and hit ok. there is no error -32, probably is -34, or hard drive full.

As, Blizzard, some games have a new innovation called "Anti-Piracy Protection." I had the same problem that TonyRado is having when I tried to make a disk image of Brood War so I could listen to Radiohead while I whoop with the Zerg. I was very disappointed that I couldn't open Starcraft without the physical CD (until I found about MP3 ; ). That said, I think Tony's only choice is to bring the CD around or play the demo =).
