This might seem to be a stupid question, but mst of my friends who own a PC (well, U know I still need some friends, even if they're on the dark side) have some kind of shareware that tells them if a friend is online. They enter a kind of "buddy list" and they can see who is there.
It's pretty cool, cause it avoids typing the /whois command a 100 times
