Buy it: $24.99 pre-order with free shipping is a great deal. I am not a particular fan of the movies (although I love Giger's aliens) but the game is great.

I thought the game would seem dated but fun, but in fact the graphics seem about at the level of UT or Q3--actually better, on my low-end Mac (PowerBook 333): I can turn the detail higher than I can with newer games. I suppose the polycounts must be lower but it looks great to me. And some of the effects like the special vision modes and the fire effects are good enough to make any modern game proud. Basically, if I was told this game were newly released today, I would not complain about the graphics. Maybe with a high-end video board I'd see more difference. The sound and music are great too.

In any case, the game is fun and unique, and no other game can take its place. Playing as alien is really fun (but different), and multiplayer works great on my modem. The atmosphere that is created really draws you in, and when reviewers say it's like three totally different games for one price, they aren't kidding. And PC maps, skins and mods work on Mac!

I find it a little bit disturbing when the civilians curl up with head in hands and start crying in fear, but thankfully much of the graphic violence is obscured somewhat by the spooky lighting and the cool vision modes.

I'm off to GameRanger for some more wall-crawling fun....

i would love to know how it preformed on a old ati rage pro. in classic i could go voodoo2, but i would be a very happy guy if i could run this in osX on the rage pro on my imac rev b/d with a 400 mhz iforce.

i can wait for 10.1, then we will see.

There's someone in my head but its not me...

I've got 10.0.4 running on an iBook 500 (Dual USB).
Avp runs amazingly smooth. At least 40fps at 800x600.
Playable thus far at 10x6x16. Definite purchase for me.

I have AvP running on a rev c with 160 mb ram, the game isnt unplayable but when any advanced lighting or enemys come on screen the framerate drops to 5 - 15 fps. Parts of the predator mission get a lot of slowdown and when using the predators nightvision the game is almost unplayable. With your upgrade card it should run fine, and if you mess arround with the config files you can get to run in software with 8 - bit color.

I have the demo and it runs really well under 9.2.1 on my G4 AGP 350 with an ATI Rage 128 Pro and 512mb ram. I run it in 1024x768x32 bit color and it is really smooth. However, under OS X, it runs terribly slow at all resolutions (even low resoultions like 800x600x16). Any ideas why? I love the game but I won't buy it unless it runs well under X. Is this an X thing(meaning perhaps 10.1 will help) or the game?
Regards,
Dave

Don't use the Predator Demo Level as a measuring stick for playability of the game on the whole. 'Waterfall' contains the most unoptimized section of the game in both the Mac and PC versions, it seems. That damn waterfall. Ground PC's to a halt back when it first game out. Waterfall shows up in the marine's maps once, as well.

Oh, and AvP *will* run 1024x768x16 on the 500Mhz iBook...played a whole mission at that res.

Yes this game rocks. It suprised me how well it ran. 400MHZ iMac w/256ram and i could play nicely in 800x600x32. Multiplayer is good but only one level in the demo?
But yeah, i think im gonna get this game.
i like getting scared as a marine vs those aliens.
