how do you find the fps on quake 3?

Bring down the console with tilde (`) and type in "timedemo 1". Then you can play something like Demo 1 or just play. Once it's done, bring down the console again to see your fps.

Another method of finding your FPS rating is, during game, hit the tilde and then type /cg_drawFPS 1 There ya go!
