Most players use the keyboard/mouse combination, but I wouldn't recommend using any of Apple's one-button mice. You might want to look into a third-party USB mouse like the Razer Boomslang to help your accuracy. Also, a little strategy goes a long way as well -- check out this article for some hints and tips:

I find the arrow keys to be pretty limited - part of playing well in games like Q3 is the ability to jump and crouch at proper times, as well as zoom, switch weapons, and any number of different operations. Because the arrow keys are in their own little cluster, it is difficult to easily reach them in the middle of a game, especially if the action is intense and you're trying to concentrate on the game itself, not which keys you're pressing. Myself, I use the number pad on the far right of the keyboard - 8 is forward, 4 steps left, 6 steps right, and 5 backpedals. From there, I have 7 set to switch weapons in reverse order (7,6,5,4...etc) and 9 to switch weapons in forward order (1,2,3...etc). 2 crouches, 0 jumps, and the right arrow key, which is in easy reach of my thumb in this position, is alternate fire. My setup is just that - mine - but using the NumPad gives you much better flexibility in the number of things you can do without thinking about it. Beyond that, it's simply a matter of playing a little bit more and getting used to the game.

If you don't use a mouse, you suck!

I was scared of it for a while. I played about three months of straight Quake III: Arena (test versions 1.04-1.08, including the demo) for about four to six hours a day, and for that, I am a god.

Don't get the Razer Boomslang unless you're an extremely "hardcore" gamer - those mice are hyper sensitive. I would recommend a Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical (or Explorer, but I recommend the Optical for its smaller profile). It's quite accurate.

I am used to my old IntelliMouse (not USB). I overclock the polling rates with "ps2rate".

My Razer Boomslang is on the way! If you must have a Boomslang, get the 1000 - you'll regret the 2000 if you don't plan on taking about 48 hours of Quake getting used to it.

Also, try this:
  • type in "/sensitivity 4.5" in the console
  • type in "/cl_mouseAccel 1.2" in the console
  • fool around with different sensitivities... one size doesn't neccesarily fit all in this case
This will slow down your mouse for aiming, but it will make your mouse accellerate when it needs to (for turning and the rest).

Also, if you're getting owned on the Internet by those lame LPB's (low-ping bastards ) like me because you have a high ping, use "/cl_timenudge -x", where "x" is what your ping usually is. Remember to add in the "-", otherwise you'll be adding ping.

I get pings of twelve to eighteen to my favorite Quake server.
