Q3 vs. UT on internet speeds

I've had UT for a few weeks now, and it totally rocks. There's just one thing...on internet games the thing is a dog. It hangs often, and there also seems to be alot of delay. I get fragged constantly because I'm playing 2 sec. behind everyone else! Is there much I can do about this? DSL isn't compatable with macs in my area.
I understand that Q3 is more efficient at internet play. Does it really have less lag and fewer "hangs"? I'm thinking that even if Q3's maps aren't as beautiful or fun as UT's, it might be worth it just for some fair internet action. Any ideas?

How can DSL be not available in your area? Come on, TCP/IP is available for all platforms unless it uses some bogus protocol. They probably don't have the pppoe software needed but now worry, that can be attained through other methonds (buy the software, get a dsl that has built in pppoe, etc)

Over a two-computer LAN, I was getting a ping of sixty milleseconds. Unreal Tournament's LAN code absolutely sucks.
Quake III: Arena is awesome. I can't recommend anything else becides Q3A. There are many more servers for Quake, too. Nice try, Epic Games, but id Software owns you!
I get pings of 80-90 on Unreal Tournament servers. I get twelve to eighteeen milleseconds of latency to Quake III: Arena servers.

I'm surprised, too, about DSL not being available for macs in my area. I haven't looked into the reasons for this, since I don't have the cash right now for it. Still, it pisses me off that the phone company can't wire macs for DSL simply because they don't have the software, or some other inane reason. Makes me want load up on guns and storm the phone company headquarters, pumping rounds into every PC in sight...
I'm getting myself QIII, those pings look awesome for it! UT is great, the maps are beautiful, but playing against bots gets boring after awhile. Playing over the internet is frustrating, to say the least.

DSL also has the whole distance issue. If you're more than 3000 feet from a major routing station, it's not worth getting, the speeds are too slow. I recommend getting a hardware router to anyone with DSL, it takes all the headaches out, allows every user on your home LAN (you all have one, right) the maximum amount of bandwidth, sets up a firewall, and is usable across platforms. If i want, i can just drop into Mac OS X Beta, Linux, Virtual PC, or classic and everything connect to the 'net just fine. Isn't TCP/IP great?
