Unreal Tournament used to look and run FANTASTIC on my Voodoo 3 card way back when. But ever since I got the PCI Radeon, t's been lackluster at best. Now, if I'm not mistaken the Radeon is BETTER than the Voodoo 3 was, right? I set the game to run in Open GL, but it flickers more, the FPS seems poor, and the textures are dithery. The menu especially looks bad, the colors and all banded, not smooth like it used to be. Is this experience shared? If not, what should my settings be? Thanks
I am running in OS 9.1, btw... not Classic. On a G4 400, 512 MB ram.[/LIST]

For that matter, what do I need to do to update UT for my GeForce2? UT seems to be identifying my card as a Rage128... Any Ideas?
Thanks.

Make sure "openGLati" isn't in the extensionions folder, and the "no ati" box is check in rendering options.

Actually, what I've always heard is that Unreal Tournament does play better on a Voodoo card than an ATI card. I believe UT is optimized for a Glide which is a Voodoo card supported API - makes sense since the game is ported from the PC version. Of course the problem with a Voodoo card is it's got no support.
But, for an ATI card, I would run it in RAVE 32-bit 1024 x 768 (or 800 x 600) - the Radeon is best at RAVE and high bit-depth, and high-resolution.
You should get over 35 FPS with peaks in the 50s or 60s.
This guy has some suggestions for Geforce 2MX and 3 cards and even a few suggestions for ATI - http://www.theinnet.net/~lesliev/ . Just be careful that you use the right ini file for the right card.
So far, I haven't had any luck with his ini file for the Geforce cards, but I have noticed that if you start up UT more than once on a Mac without a restart, you seem to get slower FPS... alot slower.

Sorry about the hijack, Mongrel. I just replaced the Rage 128 in my Cube with a GeForce2, and well, you know how it goes...
Thanks to rampant and Leonard for your advice. I'll try it when I get home.
Now, back to our regularly scheduled discussion of UT configuration with Radeon cards...

Besides the fact the the unreal engine is optimized for 3dfx, it is also going to be faster in a voodoo3 since it runs in 16bit mode and requires less bandwidth. I bet if you used an AGP Radeon and 32bit color, you'd see better frame rates. Also 3dfx would seem faster since it doesn't support dymanic lighting, or some masks, like the scopes in TacOps. Also I wouldn't run UT in OpenGL, the mac version has horrible OpenGL support, and looks and performs poorly. Even on my GF3.
Also, the reason why UT gets slower on a GeForce without restarting, is due to a memory leak. The Nvidia drivers slowly fill up the 32 or 64 megs with useless bits of allocated ram. Restarting frees these bits, and returns the performance.
Also, Also, that huy who offers ini files, only changes the resolution, bit depth, and detail options. Anything anyone better that a novice could do. For instance I figured out on my own that UT must be in 16bit to run in OpenGL on my GF3. And even in 16Bit it looks pretty good, but not as good as RAVE, since UT has poor OpenGL support.

Thanks for the info on the memory leak in the Nvidia drivers - I thought it was something like that. The guy with the ini file seems to prefer OpenGL and a very bright screen... I seem to prefer RAVE and a darker screen.
I still thought I'd give his ini file another try when I have a chance, but if all it does is change the basics (resolution, bit-depth and details), I might go back to my RAVE settings. I'm quite impressed with the RAVE settings - I'm averaging 40-60FPS (depending on the map and activity) with peaks at 130 at 1024x768 with full details and sound low, but I want to see if I can get better FPS. This is on a DP800 with a Geforce 3 under MacOS 9.2.1.
On a separate subject, I hear Unreal Tournament X as there calling it (UT for MacOS X or the carbonized version of UT) is in late Alpha stage. Hope it runs faster than the MacOS 9.x version.
