Well, today I recieved my copy of HM from outpost.com and eagerly fondled the case before ripping the plastic off. The CD case that holds the actual CD is pretty cool, you'll have to see it to understand.
OK, I installed the game (full=over 400megs) and started it up. It has a pretty cool menu with Julie sitting like she is on the box with cool cloud/fog effect in the background.
After starting up the game and playing for awhile, I noticed a couple of things.
1) The audio has some problems. Such as the ambient sounds really can interfere with things ESPECIALLY when you are trying to listen to someone talk (which can be helpful when trying to figure out what to do). The thing that really pisses me off is that there are no 'advanced' audio controls. There is the frequency and speaker setup, but there is no multi-function sound set up. The only sound controls there are, are the Master controls and the Music control. The Master control does what it sounds like and controls all sound output. The music only controls the music...nothing else...and even then it doesn't do it well. I would like to see a Ambient sound option (on, off, volume control), Voice sound option, and maybe a gun fire option. This all in addition to what is already there.
2) If the game freezes (it has when I try to put texture detail on high...more on this at the end), it doesn't record any of the changes you made during that session...such as controls, audio/video settings, and saved games. I found this out several times.
3) This is interesting. I went to work to play it on the G4 that's there. After installing it, I turned the game on and set all my stuff up. I clicked on 'new game', and then....the game quit...
I got an error that Quake 3 coulnd't load (same wording). I tried playing with different extensions, installing what was on the CD, reinstalling the game, all to no avail. Who knows. At this point, I'm glad to have an iMac.
Anyway, this is what I have to say. I hope that they can at least fix the audio thing...it would help A LOT.
Other than all that, the game is a beauty and is hell of fun to play. I definitely reccomend getting this one.
Just so you know, these are the specs for my computer.
Rev. A iMac
-Voodoo2
-256MB RAM
-40 GB HD
-466mhz Upgrade
Oh, and also, this game, like The Sims, isn't tricked by a full disk copy image of the CD. So, your stuck with having to put the CD in every *freaking* time.
Hope this helps.

That sucks. Part of the reason I got a 40 GB hdd was to hold a bunch of disc images of game CDs. Having to reach for a CD and then having to put it away is too inconvenient. Doing so doesn't fit into how I'm constantly in and out of different games for short spurts.

And...there is a bug in the swamp after the giant drops you off...When I try to get the chainsaw sword, the whole game freezes. Patch anyone?

How does the third-person perspective work out in terms of maneuverabilty? Is it a problem at all?

At first, it can be kind of akward, but you get used to it pretty fast. They did a really good job. About as good a job as you can do with that perspective and still have it really playable...

Is it like Metal Gear Solid 3rd person perspective? Or Mario? Aka, does the camera rotate with you, or does it sorta stay the same angle....

It's closer to tombraider perspective. The controls operate very much like a 1st person shooter and I find them to be very easy to work with. A two or three button mouse really is a must for this game since you set up controls for right and left handed weapons.
I noticed some sounds issues as well but I'm also running the QT 5 Preview. Mostly just things cutting out and whatnot.
I've also noticed that my Voodoo5 seems to have some issues with displaying some of the light beams (like in the training area). Also on my V5 the main menu has some lines showing from what I assume to be the edges of textures tiles or something. This doesn't happen on the Radeon at work.
All these issues are occuring for me on the demo, I don't have the full version yet. But I think I'll order it today. I orginally played the PC demo and it's been hell holding off buying it until the Mac version came out. Gotta support the platform though

Yeah...i've got the QT5 beta and I get some pretty wacked out sounds...like ambients cutting in and out...and such.
Also, I think it's interesting, I can see the lighting also.....kinda irritating, but it must be a voodoo thing ( I have voodoo2)
oh well...hopefully a mac specific patch will come along to fix these....

Do you have to do something after you hit all the targets with the sling in the training map? They all disappear, and then I run around aimlessly for five minutes, and the quit in despair...

This stumped me for a while, too. Actually, there are still targets left! Some random crap like a light, and a plant I think. Just shoot everything on the ceiling beam in the middle of the room. You should get the whooshing light effects, and the porn-star narrator telling you what to do next in a very breathy voice... ;P

Thank you, kind sir, it turned out there was a teensy little plant on the right rafter that was causing my ills, but they are all solved now and I am a veritable expert in controlling Julie.
I think she's the only girl that's ever listened to me =)

Issues needing resolution:
Random cut-out of audio: sometimes the audio will just drop out, and never return until after restart. Tough to follow the instructions with no captioning...
Random texturing failure: every now and again, when I drop into the sewer, the two gents with me will be modeled fine, but have to texturing other than a flat white.
Collision detection: this one is irritating. I find it quite easy to become embedded in obstacles/walls.
All things considered, I'm somewhat disappointed. I've been jonesing on this game for quite some time, and now... well, I don't think I'm going to pay for it. I can't wait for Oni, though. :-)
