Anyone have first-hand experience with the quality of Quake3 and Deus Ex on a new iBook SE? 466 MHz, 192 MB RAM... ???

Thoughts?

Thanks...

Quake 3 should run fine, I had Unreal Tournament running fairly well (gets slow when the action gets extreme) on my Firewire Powerbook 400 with 192MB. Deus Ex should run fairly well as long as you keep the resolution down to 640 x 480. It might get a little slow when the action gets extreme.

Uh. No. Do NOT listen to that guy. Dues Ex will NOT run on an ibook. I mean... it might RUN, but it wouldnt be worth playing.... your video card is holding you back. Sorry man. You'd get pathetic FPS.

THE STRAIGHT DOPE:

If you speak about the recently released FireWire iBooks (Indigo, Key Lime, Graphite), these models ship with a Rage Mobility 128 with 8 megs of VRAM, reasonable enough to play FAKK2 at 640x480 with Medium texture settings. These should run all games you mention at a decent clip (roughly the same as the currently shipping PowerBook G3 and the original slot-loading iMac). See the 12.2000 issue of MacWorld for a comparison of the new iBook to the old model and with PB G3.

The previous iBook (non-FireWire) had the equivalent of a Rage Pro with 4 meg VRAM which runs heavy textured games abyssmally slow, as you run out of texture memory. If you set UT to 320x240 pixel doubled with Ultra Low texture settings and everything turned off you can ALMOST play it, but not extremely satisfying.

To restate the obvious: new iBooks MUCH improved graphics subsystem over previous iBooks.

Thanks,
Chris

Deus ex will run on your ibook. It may not be the best but useable you should run low settings everything off and 640*480 for best results. At times though it will get laggy and slow fps performance when drawing big areas or in action. I use to try and run it on my imac 333 but it didnt run good. Now my g4 450 384megs of ram is good to go. :-)
