So, what do you guys think about Mac OS X for web development ?

Me ? I'm ecstatic ! To be able to run Apache on my iBook, along with a full Perl dist, PHP and MySQL - as well as running Dreamweaver and Fireworks (in Classic) on the same machine - is simply perfect.

I think - in terms of a web development environment - Mac OS X is the state of the art.

The only thing I miss currently is being able to run Virtual PC to check the sites in Windows browsers. Other than that - it's perfect.

I've been using OS 9 for web development for quite some time. I run a Mac based web/mail server on an old performa 6200, basically I had it lying around, so a good way to recycle.

I use Tomcat as the web server, which gives me a jsp environment to play in and use a free java based database backend (hypersonic). On my old 6200 it works just fine.

OS X does take web development to the next level, with the inclusion of PHP, MySQL, Java 2, and Apache. Combined with it's shell environment, and ease of use, it's terrific.

As far as web browsers go, there's certainly more to choose from these days, stopping at IE and Netscape used to be the norm, but with browsers such as OmniWeb, Opera, and iCab gaining momentum, there's a lot more to check these days.

I can only hope that OS X gains more ground in the web development sectors, I believe it's a much better and integrated environment than other solutions at this point.

I'm with you guys. Running apache, mysql, and php on my mac, and its freakin great. It seems so weird... sometimes i forget im even using a mac.

It's nice to develop this stuff for my job on my home machine, and then upload it to work and know that it will work perfectly on those linux machines with zero modifications. Hard to get used to.
everything you know is wrong (and stupid)

Web development? OSX sucks for it. Pathetic.

Web HOSTING? Yeah, its pretty cool.

Why does it suck? Cause there are so few apps available. I mean come on, you don't even have PS and ImageReady for it... in time it might be good, but now? No way.

Stick to a real option like OS9 or Win2K.

Ciph - maybe you should take those anit-MacOS X blinkers off for a while and see the light. No Photoshop ? It runs OK in Classic last time I checked, and don't tell me you need 100% performance and multi-megabyte image editing for web work either.

Win2K ? Haaaa ! that's funny. Tell that to the guy sat next to me who has to reboot his Win2K PC five a day whenever he tried to use Photoshop.

I'm bemused why you think OS X 'sucks' for web dev - I've already said that I can do 100% of my work (and I do graphics, HTML layout, database development, Perl and PHP scripting, Apache configuration) in OSX, so I fail to see what applications are 'missing'.

I personally think that Mac OS X is good for development but is crap for web hosting.

To slow and a waste of resources. Apache works much better with something like FreeBSD.
I always use protection when fscking my Mac... Do you?
