Our site offers users the opportunity to download a software program. I'm having trouble finding the correct code. What has worked in the past with our former Windows based webhost doesn't seem to work now with our UNIX based webhost.

For example,

<font face="Comic Sans MS"><a href="http://oursite.com/disk1/">DISK1</a></font>

just shows an Index of Disk1's compressed files and no downloading occurs. I've tried the code with the "/" omitted after "disk1" as well.

Sure would appreciate some help on this .... and thanking you in advance!

Oops ... can't send html code without that code being displayed in design mode.

Let's try again, removing some of the code

<a href="http://oursite.com/disk1/" target="_blank">http://oursite.com/disk1/</a> enclosed in quotation marks and prefaced with the usual font info and a href statement, followed by the label, etc.

You'll need to supply an href to the actual file, not just the parent directory. So your link would look more like: <a href="http://oursite.com/disk1/program.zip" target="_blank">http://oursite.com/disk1/program.zip</a>

I'd suggest you encode your software using a compression format like .zip or .tar (or even .sit) to make sure the file is less succeptible to corruption via download, and to keep the size down.

Is that helpful?
Computer thez nohhh...
