okay. i dont know much about this html stuff but im asking for my wife. in 9 she used to be able to pop open her raw handwritten html files in simpletext, edit them as she pleased, and save out and tada everythings fine. she tried to do the same thing in X with textedit and she said the program wouldnt save in html format and botched up some of her files?

is she missing some setting in textedit or does she need to try another program? any raw html'ers around here?

i tried it once, back in public beta days, it dissed me when i tried to save as html. i think it's the rich text formatting thing. i've never tried since.

suggestion: BBEdit Lite

okay, i just tried it and i was wrong

hit prefs:
  • set New Document Format to Plain Text
  • turn off the "Append .txt extension..." thing, although you might get away without that

seemed fine when i did those, so give it a go

i still suggest BBE though

damn. that was fast.

the settings in textedit are currently set like you say (for those 2 settings anyway). i dont think anything has changed since the problems.

i downloaded bbedit for her to try though. when she double clicks her html files, its still going to open in textedit though, right? how can i get it so those files just pop open into bbedit if she decides she likes that one better?

if you think of anything else, im all ears.

either: drag them onto BBE and Save As, using the option to make them BBE files, copy/paste into BBE and just Save As (if the Lite version doesn't have that option), or grab File Buddy to change their creator from ttxt to R*ch

well. ill tell her to give the bbedit thing a try. if she opens them in bbedit and saves as from bbedit, then theyll be bbedit files and always open out of that program, right?

ps thanks for your help.

i've not used the Lite version, but i'm sure that'll be the case, yes

if you can afford the full version, go for it

no worries about the help. that's what this board is for.

well, apart from the lounge...

Don't forget you can always Get Info in the Finder and select the application in the Open With... setting.
If they're not saving with the BBEdit creator code, drag them into BBedit and do a Save As, click the Options and you can set the file creator there.

I'm not sure what the problem is here. I use textEdit all the time to edit html, php, perl scripts, etc all without a single problem. Just make sure to save them as plain text and when your wife is opening the file, there is an option in the open dialog to ignore rich text format or something to that effect. You will want to do that or you'll get an html file as seen by a text editor instead of Explorer. Not pretty...
Yeah, about those TPS reports, didn't you get the memo?

Textedit works fine, after you make a few adjustments first...

as was already mentioned, click the box to "ignore rich text commands" in the open dialog, and in the preferences, click "plain text" under "New document format." Under "Saving", uncheck the "append .txt extension." Finally, under "Rich text processing, check the box to "ignore rich text commands in .HTML files." Textedit can be good for editing html, but BBEdit is damn good too, and I know many html coders that prefer BBEdit to anything else...
