There seem to be lots of PHP fans out there. I've done a bunch of online PHP tutorials and am getting the hang of it but I always like to have a book around.
I'm looking for a advanced beginer/intermediate PHP book which can be used both as a tutorial sort of thing and as a reference. Something between the Visual Quickstart type of thing and the O'Reilly tomes. I'll be using PHP with MySQL so something that touches on the combo would be good. I've been doing HTML for years, Javascript and a little Perl but am by no means a programmer. I just use what I need to get the job done.
Any suggestions?

Check out Core PHP Programming. I first bought this for use with PHP3 and also the update for PHP4. There are a few errors, but overall it is a great book!
Hope this helps!

I've found the Julie Meloni "PHP essentials" very good, and do also always have the Wrox "PHP programming" around.
Good luck!

Before you spend money, get everything you can from http://www.php.net/ . It's surprisingly useful.

As sadie has said, make sure to read the official documentation at php.net. If you've ever programmed a C-style language before (C, C++, Perl, Javascript, Java) you should be able to get away with just reading the documentation.

Check out O'Reilly's 'Webmaster in a Nutshell' book - there's a slim section on PHP in there (the same as their 'PHP Pocket Reference'), plus you get tons of other essential reference for web development.

I know this is way off topic,
but looking at the links here I see again that amazon.com is blindly supported by almost everyone like Microsoft is.
Those who are not offended by my post yet and would like to read a bit about amazon.com from another point of view or those who would like to have links to other book retailers might want to have a look at http://www.noamazon.com/. My apologies to all others, but driven by the spirit of "Think Different" I felt I had to write this.
