Here's the site:
http://website.lineone.net/~scifi-minds/new_coding/
It's my friend's scifi site. He is a PC user, and I end up testing his site on behalf of the mac community. Until recently, it was not compatible with anything except IE classic, since the dropdown menu was his only navigation. Now he has a links bar, it should be easier.
Technical and design recommendations are welcome, I'll make sure they are passed along.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Here's my review:
CRAP
Suggested improvements:
Take it down, and don't let it back up before you've learned how to design a proper page.
Here's a free hint:
No text should EVER scroll.
Sorry about being cranky today

Passed on your... uh... sentiments
I hadn't realised the text did scroll, as in Omni it doesn't. My friend said he'd remove that, but to find out what you think of the rest of it.

You're an a$$!
Grow up and get off the board if you don't have any constructive criticism.
Sorry about being cranky today.

Hi,
I'm the friend.
Have a look at the new version of the site then - I'm uploading it at the moment. http://website.lineone.net/~scifi-minds/new_coding/
That more to your taste? I removed the scrolling text at the top of the page - it was the first time I'd used that effect on a webpage, and probably not the last. I can't see your problem with scrolling text...
"Suggested improvements:

Erm... Whatever. I learn as I go along. I'd like to see you do a better page. Especially considering what I use to do it. Notepad anyone? Oh, yeah, go ahead, give me a list of decent programs which can do it, dead easy, oh, and you get free bloating of the page, with the added feature of very few features...
I accept civilized, sensible comments. In this case, I agree with you, due to compatability issues (i.e. not working in Omniweb.) Please, don't just say it's crap. It makes me wonder about Mac users as a whole... (No offence Amorya.)
Sorry about the lengthy writing...
Oh, to let you know, there are other pages on the new version of the site other than the front page - click around a bit.
'Bye, for now,
Inigo

O.k. 1st page:
1. too much purple between the header and content. decrease the space.
2. if you like purple then incorporate it better - right now it doesn't look like it belongs. instead, why not use that icyblue like the star or the NCC's thrusters? or try a shade of green or something?
3. why can i scroll down MUCH past the end of the content? fix this.
4. in your stylesheet you tell all a's to be blue. you're telling it in teh body tag as well. nice touch but it's overkill and your buddy's gonna pull his hair out when he can't change the a's because he's specified it in a bunch of places.
5. keep most important keywords first in teh list. ive heard, but have no evidence, that search engines don't index all keywords, just the first x.
6. imagemaps. excellent! i like 'em - better than slicing images which makes more connections necessary as well as downloads SLOWER than 1 image with imagemap. good. i like that.
7. center the webring content. it looks off and doesn't flow with the rest of the page as a result. maybe take it out of that black table???
happy coding.

Hi,
1. and 3. Okay, it looks like we have a slight compatability issue here... I've seen it before, but I thought I'd gotten rid of it. Which browser / version are you using? 'Cause these things happen when the browser doesn't support the hidden DIV's I've used...
2. You're right about this. I'll have to look into integrating it with the rest of the colour scheme - I think it brightens up the site, and gives it a more futuristic feel, than a cold blue / green would do...
4. The problem with this is that not all browsers support CSS at the moment. I need it to keep the blue in both cases, hence it is in both the page and the stylesheet. Although I suppose it could be removed from the Stylesheet...
5. I'll have to look into this, I hadn't heard it before... Thanks for letting me know.
6. Not much to comment on. Glad you liked it!
7. It is centered, isn't it? At least, it is on my system... Could you send me a few screenshots of the site from your computer, please? Email addy inigo@earthfc.com....
Thanks for your comments; they're greatly appreciated!

Equipment: Pismo500, OS9.1, IE5, 1024x768x16bpp, apple-shift-3, Fireworks 4.0
Note that I'm viewing the site with an LCD so my perception of colors is a little off. Still, I would meld the colors a little better.
One other thing that I didn't notice (because I didn't put my mouse over the logo in the upper-right hand corner) is that it is a flyout menu. Nice touch but I'd make it more apparent that it's a menu somehow.
The pictures were almost 200 k each so they're at my website:
http://raman-sinha.com/stuff/
Picture1 is the top of your front page depicting the excessive space near the top of the page between the header image and content as well as the colors that i talked about.
Picture2 demonstrates that the "Webring" box is not centered. Also note that my vertical scrollbar in IE is 1/2 wa down the page but should be almost all the way down (unless you have hidden div's doing something that I don't know about).

If you really need text on a black background consider using a non-serif font for better readability... and for my eyes sake use also a lighter blue etc. for your links.

(just a few explanations of Mac terms for Inigo)
Apple-shift-3 is the built in screen grab function in MacOS 9 and below.
A Pismo is a Powerbook G3, same as I have.
Raman: Hidden DIVs may be his popdown menu?

Oops! Thanks for explaining.

I the poster said something about having hidden DIV's in his page - I was thinking that this was causing the page to be alot taller than it should be. I dunno.
Maybe I should just sit down an read the code but I'm trying to learn java so i can write some device drivers for this mp3 player that isn't supported on mac whos software crashes on my win2k box.
