Let me first say that I'm sick of Network "Solutions" due to a number of runarounds I've had to deal with, and am looking into other vendors.

Anyone have experiences registering with Dotster or directNIC? Others perhaps?

The only other registrar I would ever recommend besides for Network Solutions is Register.com. I had a great experience with them. The Domain Manager is very easy and reliable. When I did have a problem, someone in tech support didn't know the answer (ended up being some sort of an error on their end) but instead of lying and faking an answer, or puting me on hold, they actually called me back with an answer, and told me that they resolved it already. I can't remember a company ever calling me back within minutes. Very polite, and very fast service.

I would agree... Register.com is great, and I have never had any problems with them either. You can do all the DNS stuff yourself, and not have to rely on someone else to handle it...

Another Register.com guy here. The real trick is to look for a Register.com sale. I registered a domain for $1 through a promo with Staples. Not sure they have any running, though..

This year I was going to transfer to another registrar. I put in a transfer request, and Reg offered to renew me for $12, so I stayed. If you're willing to dance a bit, you can get the service and the price, which is a nice combo

I wouldn't use any other service (dotster etc..) I have heard bad things about all of them.

I've been pleased when dealing with Tera-Byte. I've used their redirection.net service for a number of domains and have no problems (was referred to them by a friend who had no complaints) , and I recently signed up a client for a web hosting client with them - after a little setup pains (which I got numerous e-mails and contact about, they cleared the problem up quite well quickly) , the site seems to be working just as it should.

The prices are right, too - for simple redirection, it's $13.50 the first year, $5.00/year after that, and for web hosting you can get PHP for $85/year, with 100MB of space and 10GB of transfer/month... add mySql, 20GB, and 200MB of space and it comes to $99/year. Not too shabby, I think... anyone else have better deals out there?

Actually, I've been using Dotster for many months and thus far, no complaints.

I have heard various reports of credit cards being overcharged by dotster, and many security problems with their service, so I avoid them. I don't think $15 is worth the agrivation.
Besides, next year NetSol should lower prices to compete. Just a guess, but I think I am pretty safe.
