I'm doing WebObjects development. I'm running it on a TiBook 667, and all was working well. In fact, it does work well. However, whenever I access 'localhost' in the URL line of Exploder, it says it can't find it. When I type in '127.0.0.1', however, it takes me there, to my Apache index page.

What gives here? BTW, I'm running OS X 10.1.1.

Thanks in advance,
Mark Taber

The reason localhost gets you nowhere is localhost isn't mapped to 127.0.0.1

127.0.0.1 is called the "loopback" device. if you have tcpip installed and it is working properly and you try to browse to 127.0.0.1 (port 80 implied if you use http, then it will show you the default page at the root of your web server document tree. most often it's index.html but it can also be default.html default.htm or index.htm, maybe even default.asp or .php - you get the idea (esp if you're on IIS)

look in your "hosts" file. it's usually found under the /etc directory. there should be a blurb on top of the text file that tells you how to create "cnames" and how to enter them.

once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to map www.apple.com to a document on your own computer and stuff.
